DP: Yes, but it's a big enough school where there are a lot of kids still in the 0-25th percentile. You can look at the GPA distribution on the CDS. The acceptance rate is 90%. If you have a 3.0 you have a very strong chance of getting in. |
DP: No, that's not how the math works. 25% of all the students admitted have under a 3.41. We have no idea how many with GPAs below 3.41 were not admitted from the overall data set--but our Naviance can tell us what it looks like for a given high school. What we do know is that overall about 3/4s of students are typically admitted. |
Kids also seem to really like JMU. My kids stats are much higher than needed and it’s sort of a safety but kid is actually really interested in jmu. We would probably prefer he go elsewhere and I think it’s likely he will but he and we generally get a very positive vibe from jmu. It seems like a nice place to spend 4 years. |
+1 |
DP. Why are you spreading misinformation? The acceptance rate for last year was 78% and will likely be lower this year. A 3.0 doesn't cut it, sorry. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/james-madison-university-3721 |
It is a very nice place to spend four years. I have one kid who graduated from JMU and another one is who currently a sophomore there. They absolutely love it. |
FWIW our high stats kid passed on much higher ranked schools for JMU. They loved everything about it and it’s been the exact right school so far. I’ve been super impressed. |
Same here. It is our DC's #1 choice in Virginia and has zero interest in UVA or Tech. |
DP. I have one at VT and one at JMU, and both absolutely love their schools (neither were at all interested in UVA). We are lucky to have so many choices here in VA. |
No, you don't. And the bottom 25th percentile is usually reserved for the hooked kids. |
That's only at selective schools--the bottom 25th percent of a school that accepts 90% of its applicants are just the bottom 25th percent of applicants. I think GMU is a great school and I think it's a very good thing that there is an excellent state school that you have a very good chance (not certain) with a 3.0. |
I wasn't spreading misinformation--I was responding to a post that discussed GMU also. |
It is painful to respond to this stupidity. If your gpa is 3.0, you are getting into GMU unless there is something really odd happening. I'm not dissing GMU. My hs junior who got a 1440 (98th%) on the PSAT is planning to go there. But facts are facts. A 3.0-3.1 is tbe "cut line" for GMU. There may be a few odd exceptions, but they are not the rule. Similarly, at JMU, a 3.3-3.4 gets you in (with a few rare exceptions). |
not when schev reports the bottom 25th percent of the class has a 4.20 |
At GMU? No way. |
