What are the odds of us getting out last choice? DCC

+1
We did get Blair, out of bounds, in the lottery and it was DC's first choice. We have never heard of anyone else getting Blair in the lottery out of bounds though.

I had two kids get into Blair through the lottery. One in the first round and one in the second. We are zoned for Einstein. So it does happen!

When was this? With Northwood displaced for the next 2 years, I would expect that lottery applications trying to get into Blair would be even higher than average.

Your odds of getting into your first two choices are high if they are not out of bounds Blair.
I think your odds of your child getting into at least one of the magnets is high as well.

As people have repeatedly told you the odds of getting into Blair with the lottery are really really low. It doesn't mean your chances are zero though so only you know your back up position and how much you want to gamble.

FWIW, I don't think Blair is the ideal school for everyone. It's huge and can feel impersonal and competitive as a result. Your child could be the star of the math team at Einstein but might not even make the math team at Blair. I don't think this applies to your kid OP but it's a decent example.

We know of at least two families that turned down Blair for Wheaton PLTW/Bioengineering. Those are smaller programs so the kids are socially closer and it's less cut throat than in a larger program.

I don't think Blair is the ideal school for everyone. I've already said that I think my older kid is better matched at Einstein.

I don't think that asking questions about high schools when you are forced to make a choice and are brand new to the area makes someone neurotic.

You prioritize your choices. Usually preference goes to home school except if you are requesting something different. You are making way to much of a drama out of this.

OP here,

My other kid will put Einstein first, presumably get it, and then be done with the process. So, I'm not anti-Einstein at all.

But this kid is on a track to take calculus in 9th or 10th, and I understand that Blair offers more post-calculus math options. We'll live pretty much equidistant from Blair, Northwood and Einstein.

All schools, including Einstein can handle kids with Pre-Cal in 9th. How would your child take Calculus in 9th?

My kid isn't currently in MCPS.

So, they are taking pre-cal in 8th?

Yes, it's not clear if it will transfer to MCPS.

It should transfer if its an accredited school however, do you want your kid in Calc. with mostly 11-12th graders. There are only a handful of kids who take pre-cal in 9th.

It's high school, not elementary school. Lots of mixing the classes.

There are but usually for electives not core classes that's a huge age range to have a 14 year old with a 18/19 year old.

OP has been asking the same question over and over again. It was her original question but then she kept repeating. It's weird.

Did you homeschool? That's usually how kids get to this level.

We homeschooled for 1.5 years during the pandemic, which is how he ended up so far ahead (he was very bored!) but he’s been back in school for a while.

Not OP, but that's because people keep focusing on a variety of other questions around the Blair magnet and the child's math level.

The truth is that no one can answer OP's question because the lottery shifts from year to year. It is very unlikely that her child will get their absolute last DCC choice, but given construction at Northwood I would advse that OP not "waste" a DCC lottery slot on Blair.

I suspect OP's child will get a magnet spot, either Blair or Wheaton. However, as a backup plan, I would advise her to rank them: Wheaton, Einstein, Northwood, Blair, Kennedy.

With two STEM magnets in-house and a "whole school" focus on engineering, Wheaton is probably an overall better backup plan and fewer people choose it in the DCC lottery, partially due to geography.

So, if he’s in precalcus now, ask the current school if he goes to precal or calculus. All the schools have enough math options for four years or they take classes at community college. This isn’t a big deal.

They should rank Blair first, then Wheaton, then Einstein, Northwood then Kennedy. Most likely they’d get into Wheaton and if home school is Einstein, then they’d get into that. Northwood would be a lot of transportation issues. Also, if you plan to drive, be prepared with multiple kids. Mcps does not offer bus service for two miles and under.

I do not plan to drive, and my kids would much rather run/walk/bike to school than take the bus. Blair, Einstein, or Northwood where it is now are all easy from my house, right around two miles. I think for a STEM kid who wants to be an engineer, Wheaton is probably worth the hassle of the bus.

I thought you only got home school preference if you ranked it first or second.

If you put Kennedy last, it's extremely unlikely you will be assigned there in round 1, and if you somehow were, you would easily be able to move to a higher choice in round 2. There is a lot of movement between round 1 and 2 so spaces do open up.

This is my advice exactly.
