| Give it a rest, crazy magnet parent. I think many parents like OP know if their child has a chance or not and it's none of your business. |
I didn't write that other kids have good shots. I wrote that his chances are as good as other applicants. Since my question isn't whether he should apply, but how to arrange our choices for the DCC choice process, I clearly know that there's at least a decent chance he won't get into either the magnet or the application programs at Wheaton and will end up wherever he's placed in the choice process. |
I'm not scared of Kennedy. I just don't see that Kennedy offers something specific for him that would make it worth taking the bus. If the choices are Northwood, Kennedy and Einstein, I'd prefer he be at one of the two that are walking/biking distance from our home. |
OP here, My other kid will put Einstein first, presumably get it, and then be done with the process. So, I'm not anti-Einstein at all. But this kid is on a track to take calculus in 9th or 10th, and I understand that Blair offers more post-calculus math options. We'll live pretty much equidistant from Blair, Northwood and Einstein. |
Northwood will be under construction for 2 years and will not be walking distance from your home. |
Thank you! I did not know this. Do you know where they'll be? If I want to put Einstein second, do people have thoughts on Wheaton vs Blair as a first choice in the DCC choice process? He's a really strong math student, but pretty focused on engineering as a career. Also, I'm not sure if getting into Blair through the choice process ever happens. We are trying not to think about whether he'd choose Wheaton or Blair's application program first. If he gets into both, of course we'd have to figure that out, but we can do that later. Whereas we do need to figure out how to rank for the regular process. |
| Northwood will move to the new Woodward building on Old Georgetown Rd in summer 2024 |
How will kids get there? Will they run busses from all over the DCC? I don't actually know how DCC bussing works. |
DCC busses are fairly centralized, so usually kids walk further for the DCC bus than they would for their "home school" bus. In my experience, the biggest issue with DCC bussing is that it does not include activity busses all the way back to the pick-up spot, but it does include bussing to the nearest transit center. So, if my kid is zoned for Blair but attending Einstein, they would get picked up about a quarter mile from home to go to Einstein, but the closest they would get on the activity bus would be Wheaton Metro. For the Northwood relocation, though, I would expect robust bussing options. The schedule would be earlier, but I'd expect the stops to be roughly the same, just going further. |
All schools, including Einstein can handle kids with Pre-Cal in 9th. How would your child take Calculus in 9th? |
No one takes calculus in 9th. Do you mean precalculus? |
I remember reading a thread about the differences between the two application programs and the benefits of each. This might’ve been last year if you search the archives. |

PP above. I think this was the thread, though I’m sure it’s come up before.

This makes no sense. |
My kid isn't currently in MCPS. |
