The sitting and watching practice thing is so bizarre to me. Creeps me out a little. |
The only mom I know who does this every time is SAH. She loves to talk about her adventures, too
I sit in my car and work usually, but sometimes will go to shops or out for coffee or a walk. It's fine. Not my ideal afternoon, but it works for us for now. |
You must not get out much if this creeps you out. Are you always this nervous? |
Why? I do it sometimes with my daughter's softball practice. I sit far back, not in the bleachers behind home plate. I just love watching her do something that brings her joy. It's the same as when I sit in the living room and listen to her practice piano. |

I'm a runner so I get runs in, if a practice is 20 mins or so away; closer I'd probably just drive home. It's been a great way to run in different places. I've gone for bike rides and walks too. Baseball practices have been great for this, or the hour before a game when they want the kids there early. Also winter swim meets. Not that I feel guilty for taking time for myself to exercise but it's kind of extra time that is found b/c otherwise I'd be driving back and forth anyway.
Otherwise, sometimes do a grocery run, or run some other sorts of errands. |
I'm not much of a runner, but I do that sometimes as well. Or, even better, I'll go to a quiet part of the park(usually works best when its a location that has multiple fields), and bring some dumbells/kettlebells and get a workout in there. Box jumps into a picnic table bench. Pull ups on monkey bars. And some dumbells for squats, etc. It's pretty easy to get a good workout in |
| I used to go have a beer and eat nachos alone at an Irish bar when my DD was at soccer practice. One beer only, I would make my to do list for the week. It was a standing date for the week and I looked forward to it. Now, I do the same as others on here (work from my car, groceries, take a walk, etc). |
|
People must not be dealing with this several nights a week as we are. One of us drops off and the other picks up and in the interim we go home to make dinner, supervise/do homework with the other kids, tidy up, etc.
How do people go to the grocery store without getting anything perishable? |
I’m a PP and I mentioned bringing a cooler. Buy several frozen items or bring an ice pack and things will stay frozen. Also, shop in the last half hour before practice ends. |
Trying a new restaurant or coffee shop by yourself is not doing nothing! It’s taking time for yourself that would otherwise be wasted driving in the car. |
And totally agree. I’m with the hang out and try something new crowd. I don’t drive to practice every day, you’re right. I alternate with another family so it’s kind of fun maybe once or twice a week. 4/5 days a week exploring new restaurants, new running routes etc would get tiring. One time I needed to take DD somewhere and I was so tired I just wanted to take a nap but it was too hot to sit in the car, and could I even nap somewhere safe like a park, or might I be carjacked? When I lived in LA 20 years ago people napped in their cars all the time in parking garages and random store parking lots. Not sure I could do that here. |
This. DC suffered from prettt bad depression and anxiety and their rec sport was the only thing that gave them joy and relief. It was a tough 1 year or so. Watching her practice her sport and enjoy it was so rewarding for me. I needed to see a glimmer of home for her. Granted it was about 4 hours a week spread out over 2 days but so worth it for me to watch. |
If you're nervous about getting carjacked, shouldn't you also be nervous about leaving DC alone at a practice? Where the heck are your practice fields?!?! |
+100 DD has so much pressure with school, navigating middle school social settings, and other ECs like band, that watching her have fun with some kids playing softball also brings me joy. I don't see what could possibly be creepy about that? |
Multiple nights a week? I have two kids each with multiple practices per week. Monday is the only “free” weeknight we have. I’m not exploring coffee shops and restaurants the other 4!! |
