Band-aid.
I do actually still make my kids go to bed by 10 - they're not up until the middle of the night. They may not go to sleep right away, whatever, but we still have the good-night routine down at a normal time. And if they still want to lounge in bed until 10am? Fine. I'm not dragging them out of bed early just because their bus next week will arrive at 6:40. I love lazy mornings hanging out in bed with nothing to do - I don't get them often anymore, but I don't need to deprive my kids of them, especially on the last week of summer! It's been a busy couple of months, this week is actually the most down-time they've had. |
It is strange that FCPS has not come around. LCPS where we live has sent ES kids first (then MS, then HS) for 20+ years now. Start times are 7:30/8:30/9:30. |
For us it's 8:15 for elementary and 8:30 for middle and high school. |
m Ha! My rising Senior and friends were all playing Fifa soccer in our basement at midnight last night. |
Our ES, MS, and HS are all staggered as well. 7:20/7:55/8:30. I'd prefer it to be shifted slightly later but it's fine how it is. It makes for more time in the evening after sports. |
My friend with a newly minted kindergartener in LCPS has a 6:15 AM bus! The school is literally 5 minutes away, so they're going to drive her, but I can imagine this not being an option for a lot of people, and then you have to suffer through 7 years of waking little kids up at 5:30 AM to make the bus (my neurologist's nurse has 3 kids, a first grader and two kinders, that have a 6:20 AM bus). From that perspective, I think it make sense that if you're going to torture anyone, it should be older kids that can understand a little better, and for 2 years. |
Exactly! 2 years of torture is much better than 7 years (if FCPS MS and ES switched). And then the HS start time will seem downright late after MS
|
It's because a number of school districts are following the advice of the AAP, including our school district. But, a 6:15 bus time is horrendous! That sounds like a bus driver shortage issue. The school must be running double routes. https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/articles/benefits-of-later-school-start-times |
I know about the recommendations of the AAP, and agree with them. In practical terms though, it ends up being bad for little kids like the ones I posted above. Personally, I'm really glad FCPS had a late start for ES, since DD has never been an 'early to bed, early to rise' kid. At least now, she is old enough to have timed herself on all the things she needed to do in the morning to get ready, and set an alarm to wake up in time to do all those things. |
I’m the PP. the earliest ES starts at 7:30. We dropped off at 7:20 - it’s 5 mins from our house. FAR superior to waking a teen that early. You’ll see - you aren’t there yet/ |
Oh, I am! DD is an 8th grader, and has to be up no later than 6:00 AM. Last year, she woke up at 5:30 to make the bus. This year, it would've been 5:15, but I'm driving her so she can sleep in a bit. I'm not going to lie about how hard this is, but we both tell ourselves that she can do this for 2 years. Really looking forward to a whole extra hour of sleep in HS! |
See I would never want that. Waking ES kids at 6:45 is a total non issue. |
+1 it makes going to high school seem easier since they will get to sleep a bit later! |
The counties who send the ES kids first have this too. |
This. We do band aid too. They can stay up as late as they want before school starts and wake up whenever they want. When school starts they're up by 6:45/7 to be out the door by 7:30. Sure the first few weeks of school they may go to bed super early. That's fine. My kids have been back in school for a few weeks and the adjustment has been fine-kid still at home is in 8th grade. |
