Crop tops

I'm guessing 90% of the girls at my high school where i teach wear them. Parents don't know as girls wear hoodies to leave the house.

it's common here in t he DC area, too... too common.

I didn't allow it in MS, but she has now in HS. She told me that some girls in HS where nothing but a tube top.

I don't understand why admins don't enforce dress codes.

Speaking from first hand experience with a particular case I am very familiar with, it's because the admin likes the view. This particular admin was in his position for a long time before he was quietly let go, for reasons relating to his enjoyment of the view.

Seeing butt cheeks hanging out under these short shorts all summer everywhere. They wore them in the grocery store, the parks, the hotels, the restaurants, and just out walking. It looks bad. No one wants to see cheeks flappin’, jigglin’, or sit in your public seat after your sweaty seat.

They wear that in college, too. Skimpy, no bra stuff. They wear it to class. It looks unprofessional.

I specifically bought crop tops for my elementary daughter because she needed them for a look she was trying to achieve. They're just clothes covering our human bodies. Wtf is there to get my feeling and morality involved over?

This made me laugh bc when my daughter was in elementary school, the only look she could aspire to achieve was dressed. She cared not at all & at times needed to be reminded to wear socks.

but yes, girls showing their belly button is inappropriate. Way to teach girls it is their fault.

I’ve not seen one mom in a sports bra walking around anywhere that’s not a gym. do you live in a gym?

My MSer asked all year for Nike Pros. At one point I think I knew they were short shorts. We haven’t policed length of her shorts.

This summer someone in our neighborhood posted (text only) she was selling a pair for $8.

I bought them. An immediate reminder that they are like tiny thin bike shorts. They're the right size I can see.

Now I can’t bring myself to tell her I bought them.

I know the look is to wear a baggy shirt or sweatshirt over top. But i feel like they’re no bigger than her little brother’s boxer briefs.

Would you all hand these to your child?

I have a range of opinions, both free and judgmental, on modesty.

My judgmental opinions come from a different place than you’d think. Rooted in a little feminism & worry that these MS girls are too naive to understand (or not naive, and making a connection that showing skin is how they get to be liked).

My DD is a volleyball player, she wears Nike pros all the time. Sometimes we have things to do before practice and she wears what she is going to wear to practice. No big deal.

I have no issues with crop tops. I have 3 daughters. But they need to pair them with higher waisted jeans or shorts. Same with tiny lululemon shorts. They need to pair those with t-shirts for school. For practice they can wear any sports shorts and fitted tops. That's what most of her teammates wear during summer practices.

I think she means those lululemon/athleta longer tanks that have the built in bras with leggings. Tons of fit moms at my kids' school wear that. And also the same tops with tennis skirts.

In my experience, this is deeply uncomfortable for male teachers and administrators to address. To enforce the dress code they have to acknowledge that they noticed just how revealing these young girls' clothing is. For a normal (non-perv, non-pedophile) middle age adult male, this is a very awkward, uncomfortable, and fraught conversation. So sometimes it's easier to just let it slide.

Because they are sexist.

MCPS doesn’t even have a dress code except for slurs or hate on t shirts, no hoods or hats.

What's wrong with middle schoolers dressing like a modern woman?

I would love for this amazing person to be my child and for my child to emulate her.

Do you not know who that is?

Rhianna?sp. All that money to look that cheap. She is a huge success and is an entertainer, pop stars dress like that. Her success began with a beautiful voice and the ability to entertain. Most of us do not have voices that strangers want to hear so it’s no use dressing like that.

McLean. No mom sport bra sightings here as we walk daily life.

And depending on your schools dress code, they might not even be allowed. I don’t know our school dress code, we don’t allow them at school.

Why are they inappropriate for school? I would love to hear your rationale about exposing navels.

Most middle schools have dress codes. They are hoping this will help make better choices when they get to high school.

With almost every poster here having children who are gifted, those AP classes must be filled with crop tops and low cut Lululemon running shorts.
