Now instead of doing it by state, do it by city.

Nobody trusts a republican to run a city. There are no Republican cities except fort worth tx.

There are many more, though they are not the norm. Some are quite high crime while others are not. Crime tracks more by socioeconomic status than by political ideology. I think that’s quite clear but everyone keeps making it about politics.

Who cares? This detracts from what’s actually relevant to this thread: increased crime in Montgomery County.

THIS

It’s a major issue for most of us, especially women.

After the carjacking yesterday at Wheaton Mall - at 11:00am (!!), it is clear that Montgomery County is no longer safe for women. I’ve started carrying mace, but this is nuts.

The only thing declining since the 90’s is the murder rate

80’s*

Right. Cold day in hell before I'd send my kid to my publics in SS and let her walk around Wheaton Plaza. No, much has changed.

Lol! My parents would NEVER let me go to Wheaton plaza in the 80’s.

My parents let me go all the time by myself when I was teenager in the 90s. Never had an issue. Was probably safer back then.

Well my friends got mugged behind the mall in the 90's so there's that. The their stole their backpacks. 🤣
Bottom line: Ss has had significant increase in crime.
A. Is this a surprise with crummy economic outlooks for many already in poverty pre pandemic and now with even less outlooks? No.
B. Is it also a surprise with decreased policing (whether intentional or as a result of less officers due to it being a crap job)? Also no.
C. Is this ok? Still no

So the politicians pushing for less police/no traffic stops, need to react according to the publics' interest. Shift gears and stop their nonsense. Or we will vote them out. Like the second option but that will take time. In the meantime, be careful, look out for your neighbors and community.
Thanks.

That may be true nationally, and it might even be true for Montgomery County, but residents of DTSS got together a few weeks ago to examine data and found violent crimes have genuinely surged in the area. Lack of police presence is a big part of it. Despite promises to increase the presence in DTSS, I've seen no evidence of it. I literally watched a woman in a big pickup truck drive THROUGH the farmer's market yesterday, moving two "gates" to avoid going around a single additional block, and cops were nowhere to be found.

She has a right to use the street.

She does not have the right to drive on a street that was presumably closed to traffic with a valid permit.

But wow, did she actually get out of her car and move the barriers??

Did anyone have a copy of the permit for her to see? I am guessing the police didn't cloe the street since they weren't around. Someone without authority just decided to close the street.

I'm guessing you don't live in DTSS, because if you did, you would be aware that the farmer's market is an established, official, and regular event.

PP said it was the Farmers Market. There are literally stalls in the streets and people browsing for produce and ends and stuff.

Tell us you've never been to the weekly DTSS farmers market without telling us you've never been to the weekly DTSS farmers market.

I live in a fantastic suburban neighborhood in SS -- safe, great community, etc. We love it here and have no intention of moving.

But lately I have no desire to go to Wheaton Mall and DTSS. It's a shame because DTSS is great, and I like Target and Costco. Both are about 10-15 minutes away.

I'm all for an increased police presence and wondering who to contact about this. Our voices need to be heard - what's happened in recent months is not okay and should not be accepted as "well there's crime everywhere" (which I'm sick of seeing people say on NextDoor).

Now now councilmembers Jawando and Mink want to make it so police no longer do traffic stops, since they feel cops are being racist in who they pull over. Yet traffic stops are a great tool to catch criminals with illegal weapons and drugs during a search of the vehicle.

AKA quality of life offenses. So quality of life in those neighborhoods decline. Guess who that disproportionately impacts?

I get tired of all their racial equity stuff that shifts one problem into another problem, while hurting the very people they say they are trying to help

MCPD is very understaffed and they are struggling to bring in new recruits, so officers will be hard to find right now. This is coming after a council push to limit police interactions with the public. (See council task force recommendations to reduce police in Wheaton and Silver Spring by 50%.) The tide seems to be turning away from the council’s strong anti-police sentiments of the last couple of years, but it is going to take time to get the department back to its former numbers.

The increased availability of guns is a big issue and there is no real strategy to address it besides apparently catching them randomly during traffic stops and putting out press releases about it. I don't have any faith that will reduce the am on it but of guns out there.

If you are concerned about guns, then speak out against Jawando and Mink’s current bill. MCPD finds guns on traffic stops, including the type of stops Mink and Jawando want to end. Is it enough? Of course not, especially with ghost guns flooding the area. But it’s something. Also look into stricter penalties for having guns. Police can arrest, but offenders are out almost immediately.

Addressing guns will take more officers, more support for officers, and more of a targeted effort from the council.

They need to do so many stops to catch a very small number of guns. No I don't think this is a good use of resources. This is a supply issue. You can lock up someone for having a gun, and get that one gun off the street. With the amount if guns out there the impact of this is minimal.
