VT this Friday?

Can anyone say if their child got an email to check their portal? My daughter is hosting an event right now and I am wondering if she is going to find out that decisions are out by getting an email on her phone.

Accepted. Didn't get email. Just had portal open to check at 5:00 pm.

Accepted and no mention of honors here. Interested to hear if others heard anything either way.

From Virginia tech honors website :
Please note that first-year students who meet the criteria for admission to the Honors College will receive a separate Honors College decision notification soon after their Virginia Tech admissions decision.

DS also waitlisted. He will accept his spot on the waitlist while we await other decisions, but not sure what to make of the July 1 date for a final decision from Tech. How does that work if you’re supposed to accept an offer and put a deposit down in May or June?

He’s already in at GMU and ODU and we are pretty confident he will get in at JMU.

The admission letter states "With more than 47,000 applications for 7,085 seats in our first-year class.." Does this mean the admission rate is only 15.07%

Oh, if the yield is factored in, the admission rate is much higher than 15%

The overall yield rate from their latest data was 27.7% (that includes ED, EA, RD). So, to fill 7,085 seats they'd need to offer to about 25K students. With 47,000 applications, the overall acceptance rate would be about 54%, which is slightly lower than last year (57%). But the exact numbers would depend on how many of those apps were ED and how many accepted out of that since that segment has a 100% yield rate.

You would have to put down the deposit and then lose it if you get off the waitlist and want to switch to VT.

She’s on the waitlist. Do most people hear before May 1 if they are off the waitlist?
Do we just remain on the list until May 1 and then commit elsewhere?

Did something drastic and devastating happen to your financial situation between November and now? If your financial situation is basically the same as it was 3 months ago, and you already knew she wouldn't go even if offered a spot, why apply?

I’m sorry to break the news but waitlist typically means denied. It’s their gentle way of letting you down easy. They didn’t take off the waitlist in 2021 at all and with the way admissions are again this year I imagine so many kids will accept their spot at VT and they won’t use the waitlist. Waitlist means choose another college and move on. We’ve had experience with this and VT

Oh boy. No that is not what it means you need the total number of acceptances not seats. VA Tech does not typically have a high yield, though they are trying to change that which is why you see a lot of waitlisting of high stats.

So if they have a high yield it means that a lot of students don't accept offers? Or the opposite? I assume lots of Virginia kids applying to t20s also apply to VT as safety but end up elsewhere?

Yeah with a triple legacy high stats daughter we were confident she’d get into JMU as well, but even their admissions are tougher this year and they deferred a lot of kids from early action. Nothing is a sure thing.
