I think the real issue is that conservatives ignore the asylum laws, and pretend like asylum seekers are here illegally.

We need more immigration courts to handle the flow of asylees. We also need to change our asylum laws.

The fact is that around 93% of those coming here illegally, then "claiming" asylum do not qualify. They have been given their script by the cartels which is apparently enough for Biden, et al, to release these people into our country likely never to be seen again.

And, when you cross at a place that is not a border crossing, you are entering illegally. #Facts

I personally work with Hispanic immigrants in our local community and they are some of the most generous, warm and family focused people I have ever met. I also personally have known and experienced so many totally F’d up American families that I just can’t understand why anyone would want to disparage immigrants like that. It’s just pure ignorance. Arguments like this are so absurd. No one is criticizing individual illegal immigrants or saying they're not warm and generous. And somehow, because those you happen to know personally are great people and "family-focused," all is excused in your mind. No matter that plenty of OTHER family-focused, warm, generous people are following the laws and waiting until it's legal to enter. Just admit it: laws don't matter to you.

I have come to understand that there are a good number of people on this board who support illegal immigration.
It likely does not affect them. They live in their wealthy little enclaves and their kids go to privates, so they don't see the effects that millions of Americans see.

Yeah, not really. So they pay some sales tax. Most of the illegals in NY for example are fully subsidized. Free place to stay, free health care, free food, even free metro passes!! So when Adams says these migrants are costing city 2 Billion this year alone, no way that the the “sales tax” that they are paying is even covering 1/1000 of the cost they are causing the city!

You clearly know nothing about illegal immigrants, the ones who know they are here illegally, work under the table and stay out of the system, hence no access to free transportation, housing or food. Are you sure you are not talking about legal immigrants? Because illegal immigrants really are not in our safety net programs.

This is such a garbage argument.

Illegal immigrants cannot pay income taxes to the state and US govt. It's impossible without valid I9 and a LEGAL social security number. Income taxes are the lion's share of taxes that citizens have to pay. Paying consumption taxes like sales, etc. is not paying your fair share of taxes. That's like saying tourists who travel to Europe and pay VAT for goods and services, and foreigners who pay property taxes while renting rooms while studying abroad deserve all of the social benefits that European countries offer. No, no sane person would say that, yet illegal immigrant proponents here try to use flimsy examples that are the same wrt illegal immigrants here and paying taxes. Everyone knows there is a massive black market for labor that's getting paid under the table and not paying income taxes.

Here’s the missing context: Trump effectively closed the border under the auspices of covid and his MPP (“stay in Mexico”) policy. Far less people entered the country during his term, and we certainly didn’t have thousands entering en masse as we do now. Plus, people didn’t send their unaccompanied children in the same numbers before or after Trump. You can see the data online.

Policy matters.

I’m not sure what the solution is when people send their kids with strangers to enter the US. There is no easy solution. They stay at shelters for a month or so waiting to be connected with relatives in the US. Then they go to school and have a normal life.

OP-tons of illegal immigrants come legally and overstay their visa. Neither party *really* has come up with any solutions for the border crisis. The well off in both parties look away at the companies that hire undocumented workers because it's all about the $$$. So what solutions do you propose?

How many 100’s of billions of dollars do yo you want to spend on this? How many more crowded schools do you need that can’t get the kids in? How many more hotels in NY will be filled with migrants? What exactly do you think Rs are going to do that is going to solve illegal immigration? Build a wall? Cause that works really well and is so cost effective???

Can illegals not swim? Drive boats? Dig under, climb over, or otherwise penetrate a wall? I thought a lot of illegals come in legally and then just don't leave?

Do illegals pay any taxes? Like sales tax? Do they get social security and medicare? Do they mow your lawn and scrub your toilets and flip your burgers?

Look, I want controlled immigration too. But pretending that Rs have some magical ability, will and resources to solve the problem doesn't help. Just putting people in cages for cameras doesn't actually solve anything (not that Biden is innocent in that regard either).

Meanwhile I'm worried about a lot of other things as a voter, not so much where my cleaning lady came from or how she got here.

BTW my ancestor jumped ship in NY a couple generations back....
