Suspension? MCPS doesn't do that. Shouldn't he get Restorative Justice counseling like the kids who do drugs and fight in school?

+1. There is no way these kids are getting a suspension. All the pearl clutchers on DCUM don't even seem to realize that MOST of the immigrant groups in MCPS are deeply conservative on issues like this.

I remember when Hispanics voted against legalizing marijuana in California

Because they profit from selling. Not because they are conservative LOL

And, the more MCPS pushes LGBQT books and lessons into the school system, the more push back we'll see against it.

I'm in the Wood cluster and our ES just had a meeting about these LGBQT books they are pushing in to lessons at school. Plenty of the immigrant parents at our school are not pleased by these lessons.

That’s incredibly racist.

Stop rationalizing hate. MCPS has had protection for anti-hate since 2005. If you want a school with your religious beliefs, move back home or go to a religious school.

You can also move to a country without a Constitution that provides First Amendment rights.

Using a school-issued laptop to homophobically bully a classmate is actually not a protected right, as it turns out.

There is zero evidence they used it for bullying.

What if the club that was formed was a we hate Muslims or we hate blacks club

These kids know better and LGBTQ students have a right to feel safe in school.

Nobody is defending the kids if they were actually bullying. But the school email is entirely silent on that point do I can onlu assume it did not happened. They are turning the writing (which was deleted) into a “hate bias incident” — regardless of whether the writing was used to hurt someone.

Where’s the part about the bullying? All I see is a principal backtracking and trying to explain why the cops were called over First Amendment protected speech. Discipline them at school for misusing the school laptop, but this? This principal was way out of line contacting the cops and from the looks of the email they know it and are trying to save their $&@!

Letter from Principal Heidi L. Slatcoff

"Dear Wood Families, I am writing today to make you aware of the facts of an investigation begun last week but not completed until today, Friday, Feb. 10. We contacted the Montgomery County Police Department and the Office of School Support and Well-Being, as per established process to ensure appropriate action was taken during and as a result of this incident and investigation.

Here are the facts, a teacher notified school administration about finding a presentation and google form titled, “Homophobic Club Hub” on a student’s Chromebook. Our investigation found that the student shared the documents with at least two additional students prior to deleting them. We found no evidence that any other students participated in generating the documents, and no evidence that a club was actually formed.

Our investigation found that the documents were generated 2 – 4 months ago. This is clearly a hate/bias incident and I must say that discrimination in any form cannot be tolerated. It impedes MCPS’ and our school’s ability to discharge its responsibilities to all students and staff, and achieve our community’s long-standing efforts to create, foster, and promote equity, inclusion, and acceptance for all.

While students who commit this unacceptable act will receive consequences as per MCPS Student Code of Conduct, it is important that we continue our work with our students to help them understand the impact of hateful and hurtful words.

This coming week our counselors will be going into classes to conduct lessons on topics of bias and discrimination. Administrators and counselors will continue to reinforce and reiterate our expectations around bullying and harassment.

Again, this work cannot be done alone. I am also asking for families to please take time at home to discuss with your student(s) the importance of civility and the power of how words can affect all of us. Below are some resources that can be used to facilitate this dialogue as well as a reminder of our Montgomery County Public Schools Code of Conduct.

I want to restate that I am committed to ensure that Earle B. Wood Middle School is a safe, welcoming, and positive diverse community. Thank you for continued support and our collective efforts to provide a safe environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Heidi L. Slatcoff"

This.

Disciplinary action for misuse of a school laptop. Quit it with the unnecessary drama and police involvement.

My kid goes to that school and if my kid got the name right of the kid who initiated the document through the grapevine, it was a white male.

And as a parent of a kid at the school...I'm surprised that they're making such a huge deal about this. There is way worse going on (a huge bullying problem in 7th grade) and the admin barely does anything about it. This seems mild compared to what else goes on.

Dave Chapelle's latest stand-up special is about this. The one with all the controversy on NetFlix. Be sure to watch the bit on "The Baby" - a rapper who shot and killed someone and went on with his career, but then made some homophobic statements and was canceled. Not saying we can tolerate homophobic statements, but it really does point out the disproportionate response that can be generated when something becomes so politicized.

I'll have to watch that. It does seem like a disproportionate response.

"Heidi L. Slatcoff" should be fired.

Let me get the story straight...... Some teacher was scrounging through the recycle bin on on student's chromebook and found a google form that was created and deleted 2-4 months ago after (worst case scenario) a kid created the form and then realized what they did was wrong and deleted it. Principle Heidi decided that this was a crime that needed police involvement AND that this incident was of such high magnitude that she needed to send a letter out to all parents.

Who is the real problem.....?

Imagine if it was the “He-Man Woman-Haters club”. Does anyone think they’d have called the police for that? Or how about the “Down With Cis-People” club? Would that have gotten a police response?

First amendment rights does not include harassment, hate and exclusion in public schools moron.
