How do you get in 10k steps per day?

Anonymous
I walk my kids to school. Then I usually go for a faster paced walk after I get home but before I start my day. 30-45 minutes. That normally gets me to about 7-8k. But I walk around my house a lot and will hit 10k by lunch.

If I do very little I get 4K steps just living my life. The only time I get less is if I am literally in bed all day. So even if unjust do a 30 minute walk I get close. I don’t sweat it if I get 8500 some days. It’s fine.

I'm a waitress. I walk 17k in 8 hours when it's not the busiest day. I think it was 600 calories. That doesn't seem a lot.

Then round trip to pick up my kids from aftercare, another mile round trip. I average about 20-22k steps a day. If I have to go to the store that day I get closer to 25k steps or more. The run alone knocks out the 10k for the day before I even go about the rest of my day.

You must have amazing knees. I'm 54 and can barely eke out a couple 10Ks annually.

Maybe? I live in DC and while we have car we rarely drive. I’m 42, so my knees aren’t shot yet. I have wicked plantar fasciitis in my right foot though. Before COVID I walked a minimum of 7 miles a day. I let it go during COVID and gained a ton of weight. Started dealing with that last spring by running and have just increased my distance over the last year. I’m not fast, but it gets the job done.

Right now we are doing a steps challenge at work and one woman has logged between 16000 and 25000 steps every day! She has an office job so she isn't getting those steps all in at work. I feel like I move quite a bit and I usually get 7000-9000. I travelled recently where we walked most of the day and I got about 16000-20000 a day. But that was walking all day around a city.

She probably attaches the watch/tracker to her high energy breed dog. Or the ceiling fan.

I guess it depends on height and stride. I’m 5’ tall and if I walk to pick up my kids from school 3x a day 1 mile round trip each time, I’ve hit my 10k steps.

I usually only get 10k steps in on weekends, or weekdays when I go for a run. On WFH weekdays when I don't go for a run, I typically go for a short walk before work and during lunch, and a longer one after work. On days I go to the office I walk much less. I walk to the gym a few nights a week as well and sometimes get additional steps at the gym depending on my workout.

I get 10000 steps daily, often more. The way I do it is move all the time. I don’t necessarily walk for hours at a time. Always park your car the furthest you can and walk to the store, restaurant, anywhere. I always take the longest way. This gets in more steps than you can imagine.

I don't think the fan would work. It needs to stop fully to get one step.

Just doing my farm chores gets me 15-20k steps per day (feeding and caring for 12 horses.). I always wondered who these people are who make 10k such a lofty goal….yet here I am, still fat.

Dod you measure your stride correctly?
I’m 5’9” and a daily mile and a half is 4k ish.
3 miles should put you in the ballpark of 7-9k steps depending on stride length.

3 miles does not get me that many steps. I'm 5'5" and i get around 5500 steps.

5500 seems low. I am 5’7” and I get a little under 2200 steps a mile. I have short legs.

I’m even shorter at 5’1 and my mile average is 2300 steps.

I get 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day, easily. I have a German Shorthaired Pointer, plus a side hustle where a walk other dogs during my lunch hour.

10K steps = 4.5 miles. I do that during lunch break, take about an hour and 15 minutes.

You must have a very small stride. I am 5'7' and average about 14:45/mile, and after a 4 mile walk I have just over 7k steps.

I walk the dog 2 miles in morning and 2 miles in evening. Walk kids to school. I’m always clocking in around 14k. Add in a quick treadmill for bonus points.
