agree. Whenever I see someone over the age 38 with multiples, I assume its IVF.

I naturally conceived twins at 40.

My grandmother naturally conceived twins at 42.

My great-grandmother naturally conceived twins at 45.

You can assume all you want, but not all of us used fertility treatments, nor is it anyone's business how we conceived our children.

Swank implied they were conceived naturally by saying twins run on both sides. Just come clean, FFS.

It isn't that rare to have a child at that age, but it is pretty rare for it to be a first child...and then twins.

I would not bet a dollar on a natural twin conception of a first child at 48.

I hate when celebrities who are dishonest about fertility giving women the wrong idea about their own fertility. I don't know if anyone watches Shahs of Sunset, but Asa tried to pass off her pregnancy at 45? as natural even when her friend asked her if she could consider egg freezing. Later it came out that Asa used her own frozen eggs while lying and discouraging her friend from doing the same.

Whatever, why was the friend dumb enough to take medical advice from someone other than her dr?

Based on her filmography it looks like she’s worked pretty consistently throughout her career. She was never known as a box office draw and wasn’t one to be on the cover of magazines/tabloids. Given Hollywood’s ageism against women, her resume’s not bad at all.

The rate of identical twins with ART is much higher than natural conception. You never know with people if they aren't open about treatment.

This was my sister’s MIL and my SIL’s grandmother so we definitely know they didn’t have fertility treatments since none existed at the time.

Ok, but its still statistically very rare, your two anecdotes doesn't change anything.

Just curious — for all the posters chiming in about women they know who conceived twins in their 40s without medical intervention, for how many of these women were the twins their first children? I’m guessing very few of them.

I’m going to give her a pass on that, simply because us twin moms are frequently asked if twins run in our families or our husbands’ families. I’m related to 3 sets of twins and a set of triplets, besides my own twins, so what am I supposed to do when asked that question? I answer truthfully, that multiples run in both sides of my family. My twins have nothing to do with that because my husband has a fertility issue that required IVF in order for him to father our children, but people didn’t ask if our twins were conceived through ART, they asked if twins run in the family. In Hillary Swank’s case, you have the media attributing quotes to her, but you don’t have a transcript of the interview, so she was probably asked if twins run in the family. She probably didn’t announce the pregnancy that way, but it reads like she just threw that out there.

As you get closer to menopause, your eggs drop in multiples, not one neat egg a month. Twins come easier.

People ask ALL the time. It's insane, you sometimes see their smug superiority about it too (before you answer) but not as much if you just disclose it all honestly. I didn't have ivf but had injections that increased chances for twins. Twins also run in my maternal side of the family. I don't know/care if mine were due to a drug, age or genetic predisposition. Those who ask also tend to be either a bit on the immature side or the type to overdo small talk. I think being honest and not just saying "it runs in the family" can help others who may want to try follistim shots or investigate other options.

I'm with PP. Her filmography does not match that of a two-time winner of the Best Actress Oscar. She's the only one in this generation to have won that award twice and it puts her in some very esteemed company (Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Vivian Leigh, Jane Fonda, Sally Field, even Meryl Streep (although she got a 3rd Oscar in the Best Supporting category as well)). Hilary Swank won her second Oscar in 2004. Where has she been since then? It looks like she started producing her own films, most of which sound terrible and hover around 20%-40% on Rotten Tomatoes. Her Netflix show was canceled after one season. What gives?

Is trying to pretend the twins were spontaneous a normal response? I did IUI for 2 out of 3 kids. No twins. So nobody asks me if they were "natural" but I disclose all the time that I had help getting pregnant when the topic comes up. Why are some twin moms against being open about it? It's like they want people to think they have some fertility super powers. For what it's worth the twin moms I know all had help and all have been open about it none of this "runs in the family" business, so I know not everyone tries to do this.

Why is it anyone's business how she conceived? I did IVF and did not have twins, but during the week in between when I had my positive pregnancy test and my first ultrasound, I couldn't stop thinking about how, if I was carrying twins, there would be non-stop questions about whether I used IVF. It's no one's business.

Not every personal detail needs to be a psa/advocacy moment. Even for celebrities.

I’m not sure any amount of information would satisfy someone who’s decided they know more than what’s being shared by Swank. However her babies were conceived is her own business.
