There are no "extra seats in Takoma Park" for the Blair magnet program.

I know right.
MCPS forum seems to attract the most trolls: private schools parents and wannabes, haters from other school districts.

The lady above said there are extra seats reserved for TP kids.

DP. Last I heard, yes, TP slips in quite a few kids into their local program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are way more home-school in the magnet program than oob's?

The pols' kids were zoned for Blair. Does anyone know for a fact they all got into the magnet. Raskin's kid probably did on his own merits. But my kid is at RMIB and non-magnet kids can take the IB classes. Is it the same at Blair?

What type of child do you think would thrive in a high school magnet? I have a 7th grader who has always complained that school doesn't teach her as much as she wants to know, does her work in the blink of an eye, and is an advanced math classes and writes very well for her age. What are the criteria for admission?

At the very least, consider an IB program.

That said, many exceptionally strong MS students do not actually thrive in high school magnets. They might survive, but there’s a lot of burnout. I think a big piece is that these kids don’t just do accelerated coursework. They also are often in multiple student organizations and/or play a sport or instrument. We’re vigilant all the time about how DD is doing emotionally. She gets so little sleep. It’s like a mark of pride, how few hours they all sleep.

Yes, in 11th and 12th grade if student has prerequisites and there is space in the class.

Some of these magnet courses at Blair are also just regular courses at other high schools. For example, Origin of Science or Linear Algebra are available at other schools but at Blair they're listed as magnet courses open to others who meet the pre-reqs. I'm not sure if the content is the same but am curious.
