The selection process is race blind so that would be illegal.

Yes and life’s supposed to be fair, right?

They don't know the applicant's race or name, and don't know whether an applicant is a minority. That would also be illegal in the US. The allegations of some process where there's a different standard for minorities is definitely fakenews.

Just keep posting this over and over again until - one day maybe - the troll accepts s/he has to find a new sewage line to haunt.

You're attempting to mislead people by posting lies. If it weren't, it would be illegal, and the lawsuit wouldn't have been laughed out of court.

Yes, it is and has to be a race-blind selection, but you can read about it yourself from a credible third party news site.

The new process, like the previous processes, MCPS wrote, is “race-blind and based on multiple measures,”

Article is interesting. Shows how MCPS tried to screen out Asian kids without getting into legal trouble. Nice job MCPS. Fkers…

Thanks for clearing this up!

While several major demographics like Hispanic and AA students make up around 5%, Asians make up over 50% of those selected. Seems like they're doing fine.

What type of child do you think would thrive in a high school magnet? I have a 7th grader who has always complained that school doesn't teach her as much as she wants to know, does her work in the blink of an eye, and is an advanced math classes and writes very well for her age. What are the criteria for admission?

Straight As, 99 percentile standardized test scores.

Not true

Still not true

Not going to be true any time soon

Wasn’t even true pre-lottery.

A. Meet a baseline level of ability that shows they can do the work
B. Take a number
C. Cross your fingers
D. Wait

At that point it is a blind lottery now.

But stick around for a few minutes.... maybe hours... MAYBE a whole day. Someone is sure to chime in that the lottery is being secretly manipulated.

So you mean it's like the middle school magnet lottery? There's a pool of "qualified" applicants, and then they pick from a hat?

No, it is NOT a lottery.

PP you replied to. So if it's not a lottery - do people know what the cut-off is for grades or MAP or whatever numbers they use? Is there a test, for example a Cogat?

Not at the moment. But you wouldn’t have known the cutoff for CogAT either, so…?

Academically talented parents tend to beget academically talented children, combination of nature and nurture. Is this surprising? And Raskin lives in Takoma Park, where extra magnet seats are allotted anyway.

Pols as academically talented? That’s a good one. Raskin I’ll give you but Reimer? No way…and Franchot…jury is out. These folks really are just ambitious…

Franchot attended Amherst then earned a JD. Reimer attended a solid school, UC Santa Cruz, and graduated with honors. Anyway, all three live in Takoma Park, so of course their kids attended Blair.

Mostly due to their parents political position and support of the teachers’ union - exactly. What are said children doing now? Applied mathematicians at Princeton? Doubt it.

Hey are those extra seats in Takoma Park reserved exactly for politicians’ kids? Seems like it.

At least reference the more current article(s). Here is one from this week:

https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/schools/lawsuit-challenging-mcps-magnet-admissions-dismissed/

Better yet, reference the actual memorandum opinion

https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/md-magnet-schools.pdf

I know a blurb in the Bethesda Beat is faster and easier to digest, but if you want people to really understand what has happened then point them toward the court's documents.

So maybe you should start a thread on the MS admissions process, since it is different?

You may think it's different but the end objectives are the same - reduce Asian/white kids and increase black/Latino kids regardless of their performance compare to Asian/white kids

MCPS has to be one of the handful of school districts in the country where a child can qualify for Mensa, but not for Magnet.

Sad.

Okay, let's trade conspiracy theories then...

How about establishment families in Montgomery County are terrified at how quickly and thoroughly they are being outworked by recently arrived Asian families. And now their kids are losing out en masse to Asians before they even finish high school? Take a moment to remember it was not so, so long ago that these magnet programs were nearly 100% white. Maybe some of those folks have developed and are grinding away on a long term plan to get Asian families to pack up and move elsewhere?

Is that crazy enough for you? Should I work in aliens and agent provocateurs from Wakanda?

<sigh>

There are no "extra seats in Takoma Park" for the Blair magnet program.

I know right.
MCPS forum seems to attract the most trolls: private schools parents and wannabes, haters from other school districts.

I don't know whether to laugh or to cry - the sentence you extracted from a "credible third party news site" (and BOLDED) literally QUOTES what *MCPS wrote* as part of a straight news item.

If this is all that you need to believe that a "credible third party" takes a position, then god help us all.
