Academically talented parents tend to beget academically talented children, combination of nature and nurture. Is this surprising? And Raskin lives in Takoma Park, where extra magnet seats are allotted anyway.

What type of child do you think would thrive in a high school magnet? I have a 7th grader who has always complained that school doesn't teach her as much as she wants to know, does her work in the blink of an eye, and is an advanced math classes and writes very well for her age. What are the criteria for admission?

A. Meet a baseline level of ability that shows they can do the work
B. Take a number
C. Cross your fingers
D. Wait

At that point it is a blind lottery now.

But stick around for a few minutes.... maybe hours... MAYBE a whole day. Someone is sure to chime in that the lottery is being secretly manipulated.

Straight As, 99 percentile standardized test scores.

So you mean it's like the middle school magnet lottery? There's a pool of "qualified" applicants, and then they pick from a hat?

My magnet child got in by saying his ABC's on his essay. LOL!!

The selection process is race blind so that would be illegal.

Yes and life’s supposed to be fair, right?

They don't know the applicant's race or name, and don't know whether an applicant is a minority. That would also be illegal in the US. The allegations of some process where there's a different standard for minorities is definitely fakenews.

Just keep posting this over and over again until - one day maybe - the troll accepts s/he has to find a new sewage line to haunt.

You're attempting to mislead people by posting lies. If it weren't, it would be illegal, and the lawsuit wouldn't have been laughed out of court.

Yes, it is and has to be a race-blind selection, but you can read about it yourself from a credible third party news site.

The new process, like the previous processes, MCPS wrote, is “race-blind and based on multiple measures,”

Article is interesting. Shows how MCPS tried to screen out Asian kids without getting into legal trouble. Nice job MCPS. Fkers…

No, it is NOT a lottery.

A lot of people conflating the MS and HS processes here. HS magnet admission is not a lottery. The lawsuit (recently dismissed) was focused on the MS admission process.

The PP is doing it on purpose to sew confusion and grievance. And selection for both HS or MS is race blind by law.

At least reference the more current article(s). Here is one from this week:

https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/schools/lawsuit-challenging-mcps-magnet-admissions-dismissed/

Better yet, reference the actual memorandum opinion

https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/md-magnet-schools.pdf

I know a blurb in the Bethesda Beat is faster and easier to digest, but if you want people to really understand what has happened then point them toward the court's documents.

So maybe you should start a thread on the MS admissions process, since it is different?

Academically talented parents tend to beget academically talented children, combination of nature and nurture. Is this surprising? And Raskin lives in Takoma Park, where extra magnet seats are allotted anyway.

Pols as academically talented? That’s a good one. Raskin I’ll give you but Reimer? No way…and Franchot…jury is out. These folks really are just ambitious…

Franchot attended Amherst then earned a JD. Reimer attended a solid school, UC Santa Cruz, and graduated with honors. Anyway, all three live in Takoma Park, so of course their kids attended Blair.
