You know, I get why people don't want to be servers, flight attendants, police, retail workers, public school teachers, and bus drivers. Even my kid's camp counselor at fishing camp seems like a hard gig (ride in an 11-person bus for 45 min to a lake and teach 8 little kids how to fish...yikes!). I DO NOT understand how there is a staffing shortage for a NICE and WELL PAID summer gig like CTY - a well established program with free lodging, a dedicated administration, a college student teaching aide, and a carefully curated group of students that is super excited to learn and hear you talk all day about your niche academic topic.
Well paid? For teachers, it works out to between $25-30/hr. I can make that nannying for 1-2 kids.
I posted about it and I worked there too. The teachers were all young phd academic types. They got to teach what they loved to interested kids and build their teaching resumes bc most of them wanted to teach things like physics and international political economy to bright and interested kids, not push around a stroller and wipe up purée. It was a young and intellectual community and for an academic at that level, good pay.
