Asian American here.. I went to a predominantly black MS/HS out west. Yep, I spoke with a "blaccent" because that's what I was surrounded by. Of course, as an adult, I don't speak that way now, but sometimes when I get together with my sister (who also spoke with a blaccent), we'll regress to that way of speaking just because that's how we used to communicate. When we do this, my DH and kids think it's super weird and laugh because for them, it's just so unusual to see this kind of thing. But, where I grew up, it wasn't unusual to see non black people speak this way. |
+1 exactly. I suppose Clarence Thomas should be accused of cultural appropriation for speaking like an upper crust white person (not that I like CT, mind you). |
| My Asian children go to school in a predominantly Latino district and you can tell by the way they speak to their friends. That is what happens in a multicultural country, eventually the lines blur. |
Precisely. Don’t be racist! Don’t segregate! Embrace/celebrate diversity! But don’t copy us/emulate us. We’re different. We speak differently. We dress differently. We are different. You are different. Sigh. This is exhausting. We’re a melting pot. If you don’t like it, then isolate in a segregated area among yourselves. See how that works out for you. |
| I think her name is funny and very memorable. |
| Aw, that's so cute, OP. Clearly you've never lived in the hood. Good for you, but please STFU and stop trying to make problems where there aren't any. |
Yeah, they probably will be accused of cultural appropriation. People aren't going know or assume it's what they grew up around |
I thought it was a play on the "bougie" water brad and awkward?? being socially awkward is actually racial stereotype that is used both by and against asian Americans |

I hate it when white people try to be divisive when it comes to BIPOC.
They know we are stronger together so they try to get us distracted and fight each other |
I doubt a white person started this thread. Blacks and Asians need to chill on hating on each other. |
I doubt it wasn’t a white person. |
Amen sister |

My SO is from the same area in Queens that she’s from but is older than her.
Neither she nor any of her family members speak like Awkwafina. They have an accent but not a blaccent like her. Imo, she can’t use the “I get it from where I grew up” excuse. |
DP: While I am reasonably certain — based on the language and the demographics of this site — that a white person probably did. Yet another example of people trying to encourage divisiveness for their own ends. |
Since BIPOC specifically excludes Asians, I'm not sure what you're getting at with your post. |
