| Also, let’s not be obtuse it’s not just the name but how she says the name (in a blaccent) |
|
OP if you're going to accuse someone of racism, you need to be more specific. What are you talking about???
I think Awkwafina has been amazing for the Asian community in showing that we're not just the nerdy smart kids that are good at math. |
SHE'S FROM QUEENS. HOW DO YOU EXPECT HER TALK? I'm Asian, I talk like the white people I grew up with in Michigan. Are you going to accuse me of cultural appropriation? |
She doesn’t speak with an Asian accent because she’s from New York. |
| I don’t see the big deal in how she talks or her name. She’s unfunny but harmless. |
| She's from Queens. This is how people talk there. And I don't hold her responsible personally for a character she's played. I think this is a total non-issue. |
|
I think she’s funny—she sounds like she comes from queens. It doesn’t sound like blaccent to me.
She also seems smarter than the average movie star when I see interviews with her. |
| Never liked her. |
Yes, it’s clearly a play on a brand of bottled water. I’m not clear what connections that has with African Americans. Perhaps you — or someone — could explain? |

Bored people trying to find some outrage on a Saturday night. Because they don’t have a life. |

How did you get your name?
There’s really no symbolic, great story to that. I just really thought it was funny when people try to subtilize products like Neutrogena. Because I just imagine someone sitting there thinking about all these weird names, especially the water names. But anyways, I just came up with it when I was sixteen and thought it was really funny. And then I eventually adopted it. People started calling me that name and I was like, “I can’t believe they’re actually calling me this f**ing name, it’s so stupid.” But I don’t even care. There’s no difference. https://galoremag.com/awkwafina-got-fired-from-her-office-job-after-writing-a-song-called-my-vag/ |

Well, so what happened was that when I was 16-years-old, it was just Aquafina — like my rap name was just Aquafina, but then I think when we were putting out the video, the guy that made the video — and also encouraged me to put out the whole thing — he was like, “well, we should change the spelling so you don’t get sued,” and I was like, “I feel like I’m going to get sued anyways.”
So, he spelled it so extra. He spelled it in the most extra way ever. So, I was like, “I feel like people aren’t going to understand this,” and he was like, “yeah, but I feel like it would be unique, so then people [will] look it up.” But then no one knows how to spell it. So, you know, it came back to bite me in the ass. |
| She just sounds like she screamed a lot at a concert and her voice is hoarse. |
But she doesn't really talk like that. Have you heard her out of character? |
So she grew up in Queens, can put on a Queens accent, and can also put on a regular accent. (I grew up in Texas and can put on a Texas accent but I don't really talk like that, here.) You're offended on ... the behalf of people from Queens? Have you met anyone from Queens? |
