do they?

NP but yes - SOUTH ASIAN names and SOUTH ASIAN hair. Go look on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace at all the people selling "virgin Indian hair" and come back and tell me what you think about this.

Look at how many black women have appropriated Sanskrit-derived or Muslim names like Lavanya, Aliya, Jamal, Suri, etc...

But guess what, we don't care! It's fine, use our hair, use our names, they're ancient, lots of people have them, go for it!

wow, interesting. Did not know this.

Yes.

South Asian names are common and google how prized Indian hair is in the black community for wigs, it's considered the best of the best.

And many Black comedians have made big dollars profiting off of making fun of Asian people. I can't stand it when people dish it but then are quick to get offended.

Asians, even collectively (East, Southeast, and South) are a much smaller minority than Black people in this country, with a LOT less representation. This kind of tear down of an Asian woman is a cheap shot. Do better.

I remember when I first heard of her years ago I was baffled how she was receiving so much positive press when it was immediately clear she used a moniker that was a mocking play on names found in parts of the AA community. It was a common trope in the late 90s to mock these names. I know she is trying to use the fact she is a minority as well to cover for it And trying to spin it as honoring the hip-hop communitybut I saw it plain as what it was day one. I’ve watched her rise in shock in light of all of this.

This is why the Republicans are going to kill us in 2022 and 2024.

I'm not politcizing it, but you can damn well be sure that the smartypants Republican strategists are going to use "issues" like this to their advantage.

DP: I think many of the people posting here are doing it primarily to stoke divisions. People who are neither African American nor Asian Americans going on about how “baffled” they are by the stereotypes that they’re actively and enthusiastically spreading. It’s increasingly common, and seems to be taking over topics beyond those that are more obviously political.

Facts. African Americans DGAF about this. Clearly someone is TRYING to make it an issue though. “They” are trying to creat a division between African Americans and Asian Americans on this stupidity. Awkwafina has been playing this character her whole career and no one cared. I think someone is trying to take the heat off that Rogan fellow. He is clearly a racist POS.

According to the poster upthread (post copied below) this is a problem talked about in ‘black spaces’. And the twitter responses to Awkwafina that caused her to quit twitter also show a different point of view.

“On Black forums there has been much debate on the cultural appropriation of hip hop done by Justin Timberlake and Eminem. It’s also been discussed on Black Blogs and Black Twitter basically by Black people in Black Spaces. Eminem has even rapped about it in numerous songs.

Just because you’re not aware doesn’t mean it’s not happening and then when a Black person comes in to inform you that these conversations have taken place you deny … Geez no wonder these conversations only happen in Black spaces.”

So either we’re not aware and should listen when black people say it’s offensive or we should not believe they are offended know that it’s some GOP conspiracy.
