I think it's relevant. You are criticizing the location of a college and by extension, the people who choose to go there. So, where is this magical location you chose? Thanks. |
DS went test optional and got 40k. 4.4W gpa |
| PP above to clarify, 40k/year |
I ended up majoring in nursing. The nursing school at Case is top 10 in the country (often top 5, depending on the year and rating source). Cleveland itself was fine. As I mentioned, I loved the snow. There are many great restaurants, etc. Honestly, it's not that different than DC. If you're talking NYC, Boston or Chicago, most US cities are very similar. |
Cleveland... video below contains a swear word. I am the guy who attended case from 2000-2004. I would totally move back to Cleveland if there were any jobs there for me. |
| If you are considering Case, you should visit and checkout out the place for yourself. The school gets dragged down by people's opinion of Cleveland (some are reasonable and some are not). I don't understand why people expect Cleveland to be like NY, DC or Chicago. As far as guidance and curriculum goes I had an advisor whom I met with whenever I wanted. I liked that I wasn't restricted to pursue other interests as an engineering student and ended up doing a minor in history, it was really flexible that way and I assume it is still that way. It is a great school. |
DP. I really don't understand the Cleveland hate. The area in Cleveland where CWRU is located is actually amazing. Lots of green space, no towering buildings, Little Italy to one side of campus, The Cleveland Clinc directly to the other side, the Cleveland Botanical Garden is literally on campus, same with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art with the Cleveland Museum of National History just a few blocks away. CWRU is like attending school on the DC Mall, but except for 85% humidity you have really cold temps and snow (so weather-wise it is more what you are into or can stand) |
+1000 This. |
DS 4.6, 1500 SAT also got 40K. It was one of his top choices before, and a 40K merit scholarship certainly makes it even more appealing. I think they do an amazing job marketing-- since admittance we have gotten very targeted emails encouraging him to apply for additional scholarships, connect with professors in his field of study, describing life at the school etc. In general, their targeted marketing is really making my kid feel like they want him to attend and making him feel valued- which is an awesome thing for a 17 year old to go into college thinking. I think it seems like a great place for my kind of nerdy, seriously scholarly, but really fun kid. |
Things (tuition, max merit aid) seem to have changed a bit since my DD, friends, family members applied in 2019-2020. Many with 33+ ACT, 3.9+ UW got 25k - 32.5k (which seems to have been on the higher end of what was offered at the time, according to CC, reddit, etc), including a humanities student who was invited to join the Baker-Nnord Scholars program along with 25k. My DD got 25k + 5k in federal loans, her cousin and a peer with a STEM focus and slightly higher stats got 32.5k. No experience with how test optional changes the situation. Good luck! |
Even if any of the HYPSM were located in Cleveland some people will only talk s%#t about Cleveland and avoid talking about the quality of the school/education. |
Agree. Many of the neighborhoods are much nicer and more interesting than neighborhoods here. |
Try being AA and spending time in Little Italy. That might help you understand. |
This still means it costs $41K. Our in-state tuition is a lot cheaper. DD got merit from some OOS colleges that make the cost $10K cheaper than this. DD was deferred at Case (which we found odd because she got in everywhere else she applied EA), but she won't go even if she gets in RD because of the cost. |

Case educates people who quietly make society work.
I think it is a great fit for a kid who isn’t looking to become super rich or famous or a mover/shaker, or working in hot industries with attractive people. Case is a like a big 10 school with a higher floor for student ability. I think if your kid has the self awareness to accept that, it’s a great fit. |
