Forgot to mention that a third classmate chose Case for psych over Davidson, Colorado College, and Emory, an elementary school friend of DD chose Case for math and Poli sci over Pitt, PSU, CMU (full pay), and URochester, and DD's cousin chose Case for bio & international studies over UNC, UChicago, Oberlin, and JHU (bc of merit aid). Not saying one program is better than the other, purely anecdotal. |
And as far as you know, still happy about those choices? |
As far as I know, all of them are pretty content, especially the cousin, who is pre-med! The two people who struggled a bit socially and academically were the pre-med psych student and the history/art history student. Both had stayed in the same school district K-12, so they weren't accustomed to making new friends and also thought that attending the same school as a couple of their classmates would mean sticking with that friend group whereas the other kids were more willing to put themselves out there and make new friends. The art history program is small but apparently robust due to the nearby museums. Everyone has picked up something unexpected on the side (modern language minor, medical anthropology, a music minor, etc.), and the pre-med kids have gotten research positions at Case and/or the Cleveland clinic even as sophomores. Another friend transferred from Brandeis to Case this year as a pre-med neuroscience and classics major and seems to be enjoying it more than her previous institution. |
And bc it's . . . Cleveland. |
Where did you go to college? |
I should add, I grew up near there. That area appeals to some people. Just not a ton of people. And there are good reasons for that. |
Not a relevant metric. I did just fine.

| Can anyone speak to the party and/or frat scene at Case? |
So, I attended CWRU from 2000-2004. I ran cross country and track and was active in a fraternity. I really enjoyed my time at Case. It is a very different environment from so many other universities, smaller, kinda dorky, very unpretentious for an excellent academic school. Cleveland has seen better days but is still a cool city in some ways. Cleveland's winters are ... special... cold, snowy and long... but I liked snow so it worked for me. The frat/party scene is, typical for Case, quirky and kinda dorky. Case had very high participation in greek life, but the fraternities and sororities aren't what you would expect from a big state school. Most of the guys in my fraternity were engineering students, pre med, etc. We had parties and I had a good time, but it was nothing like what you would see at Ohio State, etc. Basically, if good parties is a criteria for picking a school, don't pick Case. If you are worried there won't be any parties, don't be. |
| Thanks PP, this was helpful |

There are some fantastic suburbs. |
Yes, my DS (a junior) has gotten 14 emails from Case Western this month alone. Relentless is the right word. |
There is a certain chill vibe/calmness in the ‘university circle’ area….i miss it! |

To PPs with all the kids and friends who chose Case over other schools, what was the merit aid situation? How much $$ are these super high stats kids getting? Do humanities majors get merit $ or just STEM?
Thx |
