case western experiences?

It is hard to believe that Case is worth $81K/year even if they frequently give $40K/year. We visited and the campus is nice but they had a really useless info session. And Cleveland is a horrible city. I am from the midwest and the level of racism I encountered in Cleveland was shocking. I didn’t feel it in many other Midwestern cities but Cleveland was really awful.

Read the PP and am utterly confused. Are we talking about the same school? Did not in any way pick up on any racism while in Cleveland or on the Case campus. You only have my word but I experience such regularly in the DMV area. And the info session was extremely informative as was the tour. My DS is not ultimately applying there as he is not crazy about the winters, but he came away from both saying the session and tour were "awesome and well done". He liked the school on many levels except for the cold.

I should clarify— I did not experience any racist encounters on Case’s campus. I have spent a lot of time in Cleveland and its suburbs because a few family members lived there and the racism was palpable.

I can sadly assure it is prevalent in many cities in the Midwest and elsewhere. Not just a Cleveland thing.

Cleveland like all cities has its good elements and bad. In its favor, Cleveland has great museums, including one of the oldest and most distinguished art museums in the country. Its orchestra is one of the so called “Big Five” —including NY Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra and Boston Symphony. It has major league sports. It has one of the top research hospitals in the country.

Lots of college towns can’t offer all that.

I think it's because (based on my experience with my older DC) their marketing arm is terrible.

I'm sorry I cannot answer your exact question, OP, I hope someone can

And bc it's . . . Cleveland.

Where did you go to college?

Not a relevant metric. I did just fine.

I think it's relevant. You are criticizing the location of a college and by extension, the people who choose to go there.
So, where is this magical location you chose? Thanks.

Cleveland... video below contains a swear word.

I am the guy who attended case from 2000-2004. I would totally move back to Cleveland if there were any jobs there for me.

Love the Cleveland video ... Reminds me a lot of this one we saw when our DS was applying to Case Western:

Ha, I could've written this about my confusion. We loved the tour and info session, thought it was very well done. DS has been accepted and loves the cold, so still on the list!

Congratulations to your DS! Case is a fantastic school

I don’t know anything about Case Western, but my older is a hs junior and he and I are both innundated with CWRU daily emails plus he has gotten paper mailings from them, so I think their marketing dept is certainly active.

We've received more e-mails from Case Western and Wash Univ of St Louis than any other college. They are relentless, lol.

Top PP here. I agree, their marketing arm was very active, but I thought it was misguided. For instance, my DC would get an email from (the head of the school)saying, "Larla, I was very disappointed that I did not see your application in my inbox this morning....."

Like weird stuff, like that. I recall reading it and feeling oddly guilty on behalf of my DC! haha it must have triggered the Catholic guilt in me. Anyways, in general, I thought the tone was off.

As an alum, I can relate. As good as the school is, it is terrible at messaging.

Please no more Cleveland bashing, but looking for some local spots to check out while touring Case Western next week. For the alums, any suggestions on nearby places to get a feel for the school population and area?

When we visited we did the following:

Cleveland Botanical Garden (utterly gorgeous and right on campus)
walked around The Cleveland Clinic (across from campus) (my kid wants to be premed so that is what caught his attention)
dinner at Little Italy (walking distance from the school)
fun shops at Coventry Village (lots of unique little shops and restaurants, DS spent tons of time at the record store there)
picnic lunch alongside the Lagoon on campus
Edgewater Park on the lake
FYI, the NBA All Star game is in Cleveland this weekend

Not an alum so can not speak to places to get a feel for the school population. Only that students seemed happy and were quite friendly.

Not an alum , but have lived in CLEVELAND.

- this weekend is the nba all star game so the area around Rocket mortgage field house , East 4th street will be busy
- around the university in university circle -severance hall , art museum , botanical gardens , natural history museum . L’‘albatross is a nice French restaurant there and heated patio might be open
- little italy -restaurants, presti’s bakery and cappuccino or Corbin’s
- the flats - merwins wharf along riverfront has igloo dining but you need to reserve
- west side marker and Ohio city - town hall restaurant and market garden brewery might have heated patios open
-playhouse square - I know Jesus Christ superstar is playing now

Grew up (just high school there and parents moved) so it’s been awhile, but here’s my favorite places.

By the school (east): art museum, botanical gardens, symphony, Cleveland Heights neighborhood

On the west side-
West Side Market food hall (lots of Eastern European foods- or at least used to be)
Tremont neighborhood has lots of art, coffee places, and restaurants
Lakewood and Lakewood Park

South of the city:
Emerald necklace, Cleveland metro parks
Cuyahoga Valley NP

I think it is a great fit for a kid who isn’t looking to become super rich or famous or a mover/shaker, or working in hot industries with attractive people.

Case is a like a big 10 school with a higher floor for student ability.

I think if your kid has the self awareness to accept that, it’s a great fit.

This post makes no sense.

I know several Case graduates who went there hoping to enact major changes in society. Many wanted to become super rich and now are pretty damn rich.

Case is nothing like a big 10 school - those schools are massive, big Greek scenes, big on sports, completely different vibe altogether.
