12-year old scammed in Roblox - HELP!!!

Whether this is refundable depends on a couple of factors. First, ask your son two questions: Were you trading limited items directly from Roblox? Or playing a game on Roblox (such as "Adopt Me") where you lost your items?

If the former is true, then contact Roblox support with the description of a "bug" rather than a hack and hope for the best.

If the latter is true, then there is unfortunately almost nothing that you can do. Roblox (the company) has no jurisdiction over the community made games hosted on their platform. Your best bet is figuring out the developer of the game within Roblox that this bug/scam occurred in and contacting their support.

I am loving how smart and thoughtful this 13 year old kid is that is trying to help!!

My son doesn’t play Roblox but he absolutely does spend countless hours splaying his Nintendo switch games. What I can’t stand is all of this judging. If you can’t help, move along. I’m sure that shot of dopamine you got from the judgement you passed is short lived. You aren’t being helpful.

My 13 year old is an only child who could only communicate with others through a screen for a better part of 2 years now. It’s how our kids socialize these days. The sooner you learn that the better it is.

OP, I’m so sorry this happened to your son. Mine would be absolutely devastated as well. I have no advice, just sympathy.

This game is kind of scammy. Kids and teens are the ones making some of the most popular games and they make a few bucks from them while Roblox the company gets mega rich.

My kid figured out how to hack using coding (like being able to fly in bed wars) and got banned from those games. He didn’t lose his items but they’re useless if you can’t get into the game they go with. He totally deserved it. He has a new account now and he doesn’t hack anymore.

Not sure if someone already posted this, but I just asked my DD and she said there's a hack where the scammer sends a file to look at, which adds a cookie that allows the scammer to access your account. Apparently there is a youtube video warning about this. Good luck OP--maybe if this is what happened to your son, they will restore his items.

I used to be horrified at the idea of spending money in Roblox but when I said DS couldn’t spend his money on that, he figured he’d spend it on other things he likes: ice cream, root beer, candy bars…

He does “invest” half of it, and some on books, but I’d prefer he spend the balance on Roblox instead of candy bars.

We have a fairly lenient policy on allowances and let our kids spend money on other games, but not on Roblox because there are so many issues with scams and hacks in that game, not to mention Roblox’s shady practice of not reviewing user created items for trademark violations before allowing them to be posted in the store, and then later pulling the items from everyone once they discover the IP violation without reimbursing kids who spent Robux on the item in the meantime, in our view, it’s an opportunity to teach our kids that while it’s fine to spend extra money on frivolous items, you should look into what you’re spending your money on so you don’t waste it. Its the same concept as looking at reviews before buying something on Amazon to make sure that great deal isn’t actually a flimsy piece of garbage 6at will break right away.

That’s fair. I will talk to DS about that. What else does your kid play? DS only plays Roblox and a bit of Minecraft, so I suspect he is willing to take the risk even after he knows about it. Very uncool about the IP violation thing.

Roblox is sketchy and this story isn’t surprising.

Agree with the people saying you should use this as an opportunity to encourage a new hobby.

Roblox community is TOXIC. Like Minecraft-meets-social-media. Advice to parents, tell your kid to stick to Minecraft.

Also this is emily again ——— who’s daughter connected in real life (ish- sort of ) with OPs kid it turns out she didn’t quite have the right thing to offer OP’s kid because they don’t play in the same realms on Roblox.

However my gamer girl comic con going cosplay wearing kid is a generous empathic kind person who spend time and energy on Christmas morning figuring out what happened to OPs kid because she has also been scammed by crappy people and she felt that sadness in her heart.

So I’d like to send a big middle finger to people who disparage “gamers” because this community has been the most inclusive and supportive community I have ever seen in my entire life. If they are dorks then I say LETS GO DORKS!!!!

This is OP again. I have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Emily's daughter.

The kindness your daughter showed him has been a balm. He has been feeling violated and upset, and it was amazing and reassuring to have a complete stranger offer to help. It's reminded him that there are many, many good and caring people out there. The fact that it happened to her, too, is taking some of the sting out of the experience.

Emily, you've got a very special girl with a big heart!

So grateful.

This is awesome!

Btw, someone else posted about being isolated due to Covid... I started allowing my son to play Minecraft and Roblox with friends online when school closed in early 2020. Thank God for it. He is a social kid who needed to connect with his friends. They still play online and also have no trouble playing outdoors and offline together when they see each other in person.

Someone else asked what else kids play. DS and a friend each have Nintendo Switch and can play together. Rocket League is is actually a free game they like.

It can’t possibly be worse than DCUM.

This is a great opportunity- it’s a game and maybe you should use this as a chance to emphasize that and move on from it and find a more productive hobby.

Just because you find something “stupid,” that certainly doesn’t make it objectively true. What individuals find enjoyable is subjective, and your opinion, while noted, is incredibly mean-spirited and unhelpful, especially coming off the heels of this disheartening experience for a child, and at this time of year no less. Hobbies are for enjoyment, “productive” or not (again, subjective). And games - video or otherwise - are perfectly fine ways for children and adults alike to invest in, pass the time, and merely take pleasure in. Games can also be a great way to learn/improve problem solving, strategizing, and other useful skills.

Being scammed sucks on its own. You don’t have to be an asshole and pile on to this mother and, by extension, her child.

I’m sorry this happened to your son OP. Do keep trying with the suggestions posted here. And there’s always a lesson to be learned going forward once the initial sting and sorrow your son is experiencing has passed.

Best of luck! 🙃
