It's Christmas Eve and my poor son has gone to sleep crying.
This evening, he was on Roblox and someone offered him an item as a possible trade. When he went to look at it, somehow the other trader managed to get ALL of his Roblox items worth 65,000 Robux (about $900) in the real world. This represents almost a year of trading and investing birthday, Christmas, and allowance money in Roblox. We reported it as a hack. They wrote back that it wasn't hacked, and said there's nothing they could do about legitimate trades. This was not a legitimate trade, but neither my son nor I understand how it happened. Does anyone know what could have happened? Is this a bug, a scam, WTH? How can I help my son get his items back when Roblox is calling multiple items worth 65,000 Robux being traded for 1,000 Robux as a "legitimate trade." The other use just set up an account on December 20 and has no followers and no friends, which is why I think it's a scam account. Please, no snarky comments. Please help if you can. |
| Maybe post on Roblox social media? Next time tell him no trading. |

Obviously my 13 year old is asleep but OMG I am so sorry. She would be devastated!! I would definitely keep contacting customer service. She’s been scammed before also.
I will ask her as soon as I can tomorrow. She’s very savvy with this stuff. |
Thank you so much for your kindness! I’m so hoping there’s something we can do.
|
Please forgive my ignorance. What is Roblox social media? Do you mean their Twitter or Instagram accounts? |
| Oh no, I’m sorry for your kid. Apparently that’s not uncommon. My son took an Outschool class about online safety last year. The teacher — a lawyer — has a daughter who experienced something similar on Roblox to what you describe which is partly what inspired her to start the class. They weren’t able to remedy the situation, unfortunately. |
I am so sorry . Online people suck. My son (10 at the time, now 12) had something similar happen, but a slightly lesser degree. It was the first time I'd ever seen him cry like that. It hurts. Hugs to you and your child.
First ... I know this isn't the lesson you want to hear right now, but I'm actually kind of glad that DS learned about online scammers in a way that was 'only' about money. Yes, it sucks. I get it. It's horrible. But he is so much more cautious online now, doesn't trust anyone except his IRL friends. It sucks, but it'll help keep him safe in the long run. So I draw some silver lining from that. To help rebuild: we never got any help from Roblox either. Once DC saw what was happening, he shut down the whole program, and didn't really remember the exact name of the scammer. Roblox claimed they couldn't trace where his Robux went. So not much help there. But we decided to make it a family project to help him rebuild. DH and I both created accounts, and a sibling joined in as well. We - all 4 of us - spent the next 4-5 months getting him back to where he was. He learned a valuable lesson about not trusting people online, and both kids also learned what it means for a family to come together and help each other out. 2 years later, we look back on it as a really sucky experience for DC, but also a solid bonding time for our family. Good luck. I know it's hard. People who scam suck, and those who scam on Christmas suck especially hard. I hope your DC can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hugs to you all. |
| Did your son get the item that was offered? |
Yes and facebook |
I’d post on the subreddit Reddit.com/r/roblox |
| This happened to my son as well. My husband managed to get most of it back by contacting Roblox. Keep pushing and hopefully you can get at least some of it back. |
| First, why are you allowing him to invest all his money in something so stupid? Second, why are you allowing him to be so invested in a video game? This is a great opportunity- it’s a game and maybe you should use this as a chance to emphasize that and move on from it and find a more productive hobby. |

I have a naive question for anyone who's in the know. I don't let my 9 year old use the chat function (turned off) and don't allow him to accept friend requests from anyone he's not friends with in real life. Will following those rules help him to avoid something like this happening?
Sorry op, my son would be extremely upset too. |
Just because you find something “stupid,” that certainly doesn’t make it objectively true. What individuals find enjoyable is subjective, and your opinion, while noted, is incredibly mean-spirited and unhelpful, especially coming off the heels of this disheartening experience for a child, and at this time of year no less. Hobbies are for enjoyment, “productive” or not (again, subjective). And games - video or otherwise - are perfectly fine ways for children and adults alike to invest in, pass the time, and merely take pleasure in. Games can also be a great way to learn/improve problem solving, strategizing, and other useful skills. Being scammed sucks on its own. You don’t have to be an asshole and pile on to this mother and, by extension, her child. I’m sorry this happened to your son OP. Do keep trying with the suggestions posted here. And there’s always a lesson to be learned going forward once the initial sting and sorrow your son is experiencing has passed. Best of luck! 🙃 |
| As others suggested, contact them again and again. As with other customer service interactions, sometimes you have to contact them multiple times until you find someone who might care. |
