We chose MIT. If your DC is very confirm about going the academia route (PhD and then professor), MIT and Caltech can be a debate. Otherwise, it should be MIT.
Something DC like about MIT:
Larger school with potential to social/network with a lot of people
The work hard and play hard culture. DC is having a blast so far, having a lot of fun while also working hard.
Very supportive and highly active entrepreneurial culture if that's your thing.
Arguably the best recognized brand name. Most of the programs rank #1 in the world and the rest are in top 5.

Congrats to your DC! Can you please share stats?
Type of school; public/ private/ IB etc
ECA’s, GPA
What were the reasons OP thinks their kid had to get into both? Both excellent schools!!

Congrats! Are the CS awards USACO related?

Yes they are!

Having studied at both MIT and Caltech, I would like to express a personal impression, which may or may not be unique to me. I experienced the staff and faculty at Caltech as being remarkably supportive, open, welcoming, engaging, etc. It was for me as if Caltech was one big family, open and supportive of all its members. While I was there, I made my presence known by asking a lot of questions, in classes, seminars, etc. and of the faculty and staff. I cannot recall anytime in which I was put down, made to feel “less than,” answered by any professor “I don’t have time for you,” etc. or, worse, “that’s a stupid question.” Dick Feynman was the epitome of this —- he was open to anybody about anything. I will not elaborate but only to say that that was not my experience at MIT. For me, Caltech was truly a “breath of fresh air,” which, after MIT, I welcomed whole heartedly. In my experience, Caltech really went to bat for its students and did everything it could to help them succeed. At MIT, I felt like one more nameless undergraduate, at a school most of whose professors concentrated on their own research and that of their grad students and post docs.

Caltech and MIT both offer outstanding education, and I question if it is helpful to ask if one is “better” than the other. Others have mentioned other differences, such as Caltech’s being demonstrably smaller than MIT, on the west coast, in Southern CA, while MIT is on the east coast, in New England. At least during my formal education, Los Angeles (ie, Pasadena) and Boston (ie, Cambridge) had distinctly different “feels,” not that one was better than the other, only “different.”

I’m sure that others will have their own personal experience, and I would not be surprised if it were different than mine.

DD Asian female magnet/ IB school in MCPS, engineering focused research, math related awards, perfect GPA and SAT scores

That is amazing! Getting into both! Wonder if most kids on the East coast would go for MIT?

Does MIT or Caltech look at ECA's (non STEM). Since they focus on academics, is it better to have solid academic stats if DC is planning on applying to these two schools. (DC in 10th grade). The way I understand it is that Ivy schools look for service, sport, art, music related ECA's, is it the same with these two schools?

My DC Deferred MIT EA is having a hard time accepting the deferral since be says MIT defers a large number, so the chances of acceptance are really low. He is an Asian male, IB magnet MCPS, perfect GPA and SAT, taken 8 AP’s including the two physics C and M, his interest is physics/math. Captain of physics related club and math leadership role, summer research in physics, plays the instrument. What can he do to increase his odds of acceptance?

If he can do really well on the f=ma exam and the usapho exam, that can really boost his chances. Also doing well in the Regeneron talent search is a strong credential. There are summer research programs that are highly regarded- don’t remember the names. These are some of the highly competitive stuff that schools like MIT like to see.

Sorry I just reread your post. Probably too late to compete in these venues.
