How many fights did your kid see at Deal this week?

I saw the video with the AP who is a fantastic AP. The girls involved were out of control. And I know that the kids who were there watching are only in 8th grade but it is so disappointing to see them react to the incident with excitement, joy, and mania. The school administration needs to immediately address the students who started the fight and the broader student body reaction.

With our two kids we are in the last of our six years at Deal it has be generally great. But there is an inexplicable tolerance for really bad behavior by a small number of students that has a big impact on the overall school climate. It's time for that to stop.

Is there a link to video

Folks, please don’t post it. It’s really gross that it’s out there and that people want to watch it.

Every single parent who cares about this situation should email this video to the principal, the Chancellor and the Mayor. This should not be swept under the rug. There are too many students in that building. The people who created this situation and who maintain it should be flooded with this evidence of their failure to keep kids safe.

If kids don’t start getting suspended, the teacher turnover is going to be massive. -Deal teacher

Yawn. Teachers on this board threaten mass resignations in response to literally every working condition.

Frame this ^

“Yawn, despite earning a post grad degree and choosing to work in a five figure job, I’ll be sure to belittle you further. Also. Don’t take off a single day bc you chose to give your life to my child. Oh and also, when it’s after your work hours, I expect you to respond to my email how you’re not challenging my child enough.”

Yawn

Do you get hit in your job?

There is nothing stopping a teacher from calling the police to report an assault.

My kids never saw a physical fight in all their years at FCPS. Zero.

You are an idiot.

Unfortunately I saw the fight as well. It has already gone around all of school. Mr. R was not assaulted nor was he even hit in the face. DCUM loves to exaggerate. What happened was already bad enough without having to embellish. I agree there should be zero tolerance. The age of cell phones and social media have made this worse.

So what really happened? What is “bad enough”? You expect the kids to stand up, not stand by but you won’t help them unless you stand up.

There actually is. If you report it to the police your impact score will be affected in a negative way.

You must not have seen the same video I did, unless you are trying to sweep it under the rug too. Or you are tying to get more details about what actually happened because you didn't see anything.

I saw two videos of the fight from two angles. WTF would I try to sweep it under the rug? I don’t work there. I have a student there and am concerned. I clearly said it’s bad enough without embellishing. I also have a niece at Wilson and the fights there are really bad. I have seen an admin there really get hit in face. Twice. He’s AA with dreads and always wears a nice suit. I feel really bad for him. I am no longer even considering Wilson for my Deal kid because of all the bad fights. I’m questioning staying at Deal TBH.

I loathe WTU and their constant threats, but teachers shouldn't be assaulted. The current Principal lies constantly and absolutely covers up issues. Is there anything we can do to get her to take action on this important safety issue?

I think you saw videos of a completely separate fight.

Did you see it in person or on video? What exactly happened?

I saw the big fight with two girls (one with name that starts with A) that happened Wednesday. It was on the turf fields I think during lunchtime. Mr. R broke it up and while he’s he experienced what happens when you try to break up a fight, he did not get hit in the face. After the fight stopped (with other girls separating them in addition to Mr R), Mr R adjusted his hair by wiping his hands through his hair.

What fight did you see?

Was either student suspended? At all?

There are no consequences for kids any more and kids know it.
Teenagers are impulsive and sometimes make bad decisions. Restorative justice, etc., ain’t cutting it. Principal Neal needs to wake up and get tough. In her defence, the woke movement of trying to reform kids with love, tolerance and understanding is all over the country. Even private schools have way less student accountability than they used to. Eventually the pendulum will swing the other way.
Teachers are in a bad spot. They are in their own. The administration does not want to hear complaints about unruly kids. I work in a suburban school district and we are facing some of the same issues. Very stressful being a teacher these days
