How many fights did your kid see at Deal this week?

Makes me happy my kid is in one of the less “highly regarded” DCPS middle schools.

I saw the video with the AP who is a fantastic AP. The girls involved were out of control. And I know that the kids who were there watching are only in 8th grade but it is so disappointing to see them react to the incident with excitement, joy, and mania. The school administration needs to immediately address the students who started the fight and the broader student body reaction.

With our two kids we are in the last of our six years at Deal it has be generally great. But there is an inexplicable tolerance for really bad behavior by a small number of students that has a big impact on the overall school climate. It's time for that to stop.

I don’t understand why they don’t suspend kids anymore for egregious fights. They’re back the very next day with no visible consequences. At least make an in school suspension or something…

Just as a comparison - my 13 YO attends a local private school. Several weeks ago, there was a fight between two MS-age kids. Both were suspended immediately for two weeks, kicked off all sports teams and other EC activities, and now have to have regular meetings at the school with parents and counselors, as a condition of returning to class.

This is exactly how kids reacted to fights at my wealthy, suburban MS and HS in the 80s. It’s not unique to Deal or this moment. Not to get all philosophical, but it’s really an indictment of American culture and our fascination with violence. I mean, you watched the video—why?

Anyway, my kid is in 8th grade and saw the scrum (but not the fight itself). It’s the first one I’ve heard about this year.

That’s great that it also happened at your wealthy school. Are you saying that makes it ok? Are you saying the other kids - not to mention the faculty and staff - should be made to tolerate it? Is this acceptable to you? Why?

What did you expect this year?

Kids have not been in a classroom in a meaningful manner for a year and a half
There are not enough subs so kids are:
Crashing classes they are not enrolled in
Just cutting classes
Hanging out with the gym class
Hanging out in the auditorium

Thank you Mayor Bowser for creating a environment where teaches are burnt out - and kids are not in a position to learn and grow

Kids at your wealthy, suburban MS & HS in the 80s attacked adults who were trying to break up fights? And all the other kids cheered about it? Because that's what happened. I heard that at least there was an assembly on Friday trying to address the violence.

Um, no? I was responding specifically to the PP’s suggestion that the fight itself and reaction to it was unique or unusual. It’s terrible, and I wish it didn’t happen. But it’s been happening forever.

Folks, please don’t post it. It’s really gross that it’s out there and that people want to watch it.

Fight culture — as opposed to fights — definitely existed here before Covid. Sad to say.

I say this as someone suspended in 6th grade. It rewards bad behavior. I was given a week at home suspension. If my parents weren’t involved it would have been a lovely week of sleeping in and tv. If they did in-school suspension, it would be better.

But, at the very minimum, the other kids and the teachers didn’t have to deal with you at lunch or recess or in the bathroom or the locker room for a few days. I don’t really care as much about the troublemakers when they are being violent at school. I care more about the victims. They deserve a safe place to go to school. At the bare minimum.

It's punishment if you get your kicks from starting fights and disrupting class at school. None of the schools have enough staffing to do in-school suspension.

Every single parent who cares about this situation should email this video to the principal, the Chancellor and the Mayor. This should not be swept under the rug. There are too many students in that building. The people who created this situation and who maintain it should be flooded with this evidence of their failure to keep kids safe.
