The St. James runs a futsal team (and hosts other teams for games) at their new sports complex in Springfield. My son played futsal with them last year (his first time playing futsal) and had a good time.

Is the program winter only? My son does a year round program, but we are looking to drop down to a winter-only program, given his school/soccer obligations.

Is TSJ doing futsal this year? I checked their website and it says that futsal is not available.

Looks like they are:

If you live in Maryland I would recommend checking out In10sity Futsal.

I agree. I don't live in MD, but my son's team has played them in futsal tournaments, and they are quite good.

What age groups do they have?

looks like Bethesda(with their mess) is an only option in MoCo

My kid plays classic (good player on a good classic team). Would she be completely out of her league if we signed her up for Bethesda futsol? I'm a little confused by their advertising-- it seems like they keep their own teams together but add outsiders where there is space (?)

They do keep teams together but everyone on the team does not sign up so they add in outsiders to the appropriate skill level team. I do not think the would be out of her league because the teams are sometimes mixed skill level and they understand very well the estimate level of other clubs and teams. You can make a note when she registers.

Is this only for NCSL teams or can any team join?

I have a new 2013boys travel team that is interested in playing futsal in NOVA...too many places to chose from. I found

NVU Futsal at the Fieldhouse
Unitedsportsplex
St James
Metro Futsal
First Touch Futbol - No details posted on this one but I have read posts of folks mentioning it.

Curious where other teams flock to.

Thanks for the added leagues. Sounds like plenty to choose from. I thought Alexandria was for rec players only?

Not at all. They have the futsal ID program, which is fairly competitive, and tryouts for many age groups are already underway. But, there is also a travel division within the rec league, for players who are travel players but do not want to/did not get a spot on futsal ID. It is affordable and fun - but no practices, just one game per week.

I would say that Alexandria's Futsal ID team is the most competitive team in the area. DC Hyper as well but I haven't heard about them in a while. I'm not sure DC Hyper had teams last winter. On the flip side, I didn't even know Alexandria had a futsal "rec" league. I know I'll get flack on this but I wouldn't even bother with futsal with a rec kid unless he/she is a top rec kid improving and really, really wanting to improve. As many people have said, you play futsal, you need to have a very good first touch, footskill, and basically all the technical skills or the ball is constantly out of play and the game sucks. For the average rec player, I would do basketball. : )

According to their website PAC is hosting a winter outdoor league. Might be an alternative to futsal.

Yeah, I have to disagree. My son is a travel player, and a more serious futsal player than soccer player (he does futsal training during the soccer season). But what is wrong with a rec league with opponents that are equally not as invested? It is a way for kids to get out of the house, off electronics, and get some exercise? My son's best friend is very short and does Alexandria's rec futsal league - he has zero interest in basketball, for obvious reasons

Now close your eyes and envision this game with your son's best friend playing....how often is that ball just rolling out of bounds? Every other touch probably. All I'm saying is that I would pass on that. Maybe find an indoor league with walls. To me there is a certain level of technical skills that need to be met before you join onto a futsal team/league. Otherwise, the games are just a waste. Again, in my opinion and something for rec parents to think about.
