I work at various schools throughout FCPS. I also nominate Marshall Road ES as a horrifically dangerous and over-crowded
morning drop off and Kiss and Ride line. Not uncommon for commuters stuck on the “service drive” that runs parallel to Nutley St (across from Vienna Metro) to cross the double line/pass idling cars in the KNR line to continue through the neighborhood or access 66. |
The school can make all the rules they want, but they have no control over the public roadway. The best a school can do is have a crossing guard, but they are only allowed to stop traffic for peds, not control or direct traffic. |
| Someone from FCPS sets up all the kids and ride turns and go-throughs. At our school, no one can turn left into the kiss and ride line even though there is an intersection with lights. You have to keep going up and do a U turn so you can turn into the lot from the designated spot. I find it hard to believe there is NO way for these chesterbrook parents to legally drive on the roads to get to the end of the line. GMAFB. |
Wrong. FCPS is in charge of the traffic flow for kiss and ride lanes. Every school has special rules about where you turn in and where you wait for safety reasons. I can’t believe anyone is even arguing about this. Every single school in FCPS has a specific kiss and ride traffic pattern. Only some of the McLean parents are too good to wait in line like everyone else. |
What a waste of a staffers time. The school should put a sign up (but why should they have to when they have sent a million messages about the path of the car line?). Parents who can’t follow the very simple instructions should be banned from the car line. |
This. Schools don’t set traffic rules. They need to lobby VDOT to put up a sign. The parents that are turning left into kiss and ride are totally fine. Chill OP. |
Wrong. FCPS can certainly establish entrances to schools for kiss and ride purposes, but they certainly can not control how one accesses those entrances from public roads. If they want to stop left turns, get a cop to direct traffic or get VDOT to install a sign. |
I'd love to know how such a ban would be enforced. |
+100 Schools do not police the public roads. |
| This is all the principal's creation. Not sure she even knows what a menace the backed up traffic is like past St Dunstan's Church. I saw a school bus have to go down the opposing lane of traffic to get around the backed up parents. It is begging for accidents. |
OMG. Yeah. The bus should not be doing that. It can wait it’s turn as well |
| One thing you all could do is lobby for a separate turn lane on Kirby, there is definitely enough space to do one on the block over. Of course those homeowners might not be thrilled about it, but there is space for it. My kids go to Shrevewood and they put in a turning lane last year (instead of just a parking lane) and that has been a big improvement. |
If the bus waited, then it would be another 30 minutes late to the school!! Their buses already have to do 2 loops bc of a driver shortage. |
| Unbelievable. The people are lining up 40 minutes before dismissal. |
Very dangerous because it stops all traffic in the lane. Ridiculous. They can’t continue this. |
