Duke has been lackluster recently. It’s endowment flopped and Durham isn’t really the most desirable place to be with young people all flocking to major cities like New York, LA or Chicago.

This is inaccurate. Duke is still adored by rich teens at my kid's high school with no affiliation to the college. They're good colleges, obviously, but I've literally never seen any teen adore Northwestern or UChicago. And your Durham disses are about 20 years stale. What is the Research Triangle? What did North Carolina's census numbers look like compared to Chicago? North Carolina is booming, Chicago overall is basically stagnant. Obviously Rust Belt flyover country college grads still pour into Chicago — but even that draw is being dinged by the rise of Nashville, Denver, and kids preferring the warmer Sun Belt.

Did they actually receive $2 billion? I figured it was Bloomberg's will or some tax maneuver once he croaked, never followed the story after initial announcement.

Good for the Ryans. Less generational wealth for their children, although I suspect they'll still make out very well.

if you didn't attend, how do you know how great it is?

Financial aid at Northwestern in our experience is very generous (DD graduated two years ago). The Forbes article mentions that of the overall capital campaign, "$436.3 million was raised for institutional financial aid, including $235.3 million for undergraduate scholarships."

So that’s what…4% of the whole campaign ($6B)?

Disturbing priorities.

Durham isn't exactly the most desirable town

Wasn't there a UVA booster a while back on here that point-blank admitted that she hated on Northwestern because she ultimately couldn't afford sending her kid there, and instead sent her kid to UVA (which shouldn't even something to be sad about!)? Is that what this is all about?

PP, this post might have triggered either 1) the HYPSM prestige defense squad or 2) the Northwestern/Uchicago hating squad of DCUM

+1. They may be one and the same.

And their only line of defense is XXX is not on the level of HYPSM because they said so. When you bring up facts supported with statistics, they'll resort to 1) calling the stats incorrect/wrong/biased/outdated/non-inclusive/irrelevant/un-American or 2) ad hominem attacks or 3) bring up an irrelevant discussion to deflate the criticism

As long as any ranking is not about HYPSM being in the top 5, they'll disregard it. Any news that doesn't have HYPSM in it, they'll dismiss it as fake news. If someone made it big from a non-HYPSM school, they see it as an oddity because according to them, non-HYPSM grads are unworthy of success, even if you went to a T10 school or a non-HYP ivy, like Penn or Columbia. They can't live their life without a second not being obsessed over with that stupid, arbitrary acronym made up by prestige-obsessed parents on College Confidential.

Their line of thinking is pretty much that Northwestern doesn't deserve this big of a donation because it is not an HYPSM-level school.

Northwestern seems a fine school, but before bringing up the desire to blend with HYPSM how about catch up with UChicago first? Convince Chicago first, then you are on your way.

UChicago needs sports and/or for the south side to not be a Third World hell hole. There’s the Ivies and MIT ... then there’s Northwestern, Stanford, Duke which have big sports to raise their profile and name rec. Plus Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vandy. UChicago is screwed. Nobody gives a crap about their old quirky reputation and nobody finds 0 degree weather and dodging stick-ups and shootings cool.

Chicago has a limited endowment and has a ton of debt that can really hurt them

Just think of how much more popular NW would be if it weren't in Chicago...that crosses it off our family's list (and a lot of other coastal families we know.)

It is an impressive campaign, but it started publicly in March 2014 and would have probably had a 3 year private phase before that, so this is over 10 years of effort at this point, and nearly half of it has gone to Northwestern Medicine, which does not have any undergraduates.

Over $2.8M to Northwestern Medicine with no undergrads.

I mean... the average college town is a dump. Ann Arbor is a provincial backwater with crumbling streets and miserably cold and grey half the year.
