Toddler death on a cruise ship. So tragic

The ship hadn't even left the dock.

So this family basically boarded this ship and before they could even get their bags unpacked, Grandpa had lifted his granddaughter onto an open window ledge where she plummeted to her death.

Crazy.

Yes. And to the PP, I have stayed in a balcony room with small children and felt 100% safe. Because I never lifted them up and propped them on the ledge.

I’ve only taken one cruise and we booked a balcony room. I had anxiety about it and our kids in the weeks leading up to the trip. Within 30 seconds of seeing it, I was fine. The railing was very high. My kids could sort of reach it by standing on an end table, so I got rid of the end table.

You know you are helping the safety queens on here. Grandpa hadn't been to ship window orientation yet. Of course, he isn't responsible.

I can't tell if you are serious or not.

I feel better and better about RC as time goes on. They are handling this with compassion and class. However, someone who knows the family is going to make a ton of money with a “tell all” about Grandpa’s deal: maybe he has dementia and the family knew it when they left him in charge of the baby or he’s always done reckless stuff with the kids despite them begging him not to.

I keep seeing that the newer RC ships don’t have windows that slide open but I swear I remember seeing windows that slid open on the Allure of the Seas, which is newer and larger. We were on it in 2018

I have been a couple different ones (yes, I am low class, forgive me DCUM, but I enjoy floating hotels). There's definitely some sort of smoking area where the windows open on the upper decks. It was still there even on the newer ships as I recall.

Just read the obituary. So sweet and heartbreaking.

Sounds like Salvatore Anello was actually the mother's stepfather, looking at the grandparents's names in the obituary. I'm sure he's just as heartbroken as the other grandparents, but found that interesting.

That truly is a beautiful and heartbreaking tribute to their beautiful little girl. Chloe was very obviously very much adored. Such a horrible tragedy for that entire family.

Maybe the grandpa opened the window so he and the child could get a better view?

Maybe. Or another passenger opened the window and left it open. I'm sure the security camera footage will show how the window got open.

I do think that it was obvious that the window was open, though, regardless of who actually opened it.

Man, that’s horribly sad. If the offending grandfather is the step-relative, that’s gotta especially sting, I’d think.

Rest, sweet Chloe.

This video shows the windows shortly after the accident (first few seconds of the video, Taken by the dad). There are a few more pictures throughout the video. It isn't really obvious from these pics.

Those pictures were taken when it was dark outside so the tinted glass of the closed windows is not obvious. The accident happened during the late afternoon when the sun was still up so the tinted windows would be much more obvious.
