Toddler death on a cruise ship. So tragic

Also, another reminder of why I wouldn't let grandparents care for toddlers.

So, so sad.

Very sad, I can't imagine how the family can ever recover. But it's clearly a freak accident, not actual evidence of why grandparents shouldn't care for toddlers.

This has nothing to do with a grandparent watching a child. It could have happened to anyone. There was a low open window that should never have been open. Grandparent didn't realize it and set the child near it and child fell out.

The story has changed at least three times. Now the parents are blaming the cruise ship.

Poor baby!

Other reports said it was a window... but regardless it was a pure accident that could happen to any of us.

Grandpa couldn’t see a pane of glass was missing?

I don't understand how you don't realize a window is open

But I also don't understand why people put their kids on railings at the zoo.

This has nothing to do with grandparents not being able to take care of toddlers and just another story about an accident happening from being being unaware of their surroundings.

You shouldnt lift kids to sit on railings/window sills.

Just so awful. Stories like this are why I try to avoid checking the news.

Of course they are. That's what people do. It was an accident but it's not like the window was open at child level. It sounds like the grandpa lifted the kid up on a railing.

Um, no. The family thought it was “cute” when the toddler banged on the glass safety wall at the ice rink where her brother skated. Grandpa knew that habit and that’s why he set her on the railing. Predictably she leaned forward to bang on the glass. Except grandpa missed there was no glass so she fell.

Must have been terrified!

But now they will hold everyone but grandpa accountable.

It was not a low window. It was the same height as the rail on a balcony, which there are at least 1,000 of them on that ship because there are so many balcony cabins. When you are 11 stories up on a cruise ship there is wind that comes through the windows so you can tell when a window is open. I would never hold my kid up to see over a balcony by standing right by the balcony.

I was playing ping pong on a cruise ship on the 10th floor pool described and a realized a window was open because wind created a draft even though it appeared there was no wind because we were docked.

This whole thing is just godawful. I can't imagine how terrible the parents and grandparents feel, and I'm sure it helps to have someone to blame. That said, the idea that the children's play area was on the top-most level of the ship and had a glass-free opening that a kid could climb to (not what happened here, I'm aware, but if grandpa lifted her that high I'm imagining that a bigger kid could also climb that high) seems incredibly unsafe. I'd be interested to see a picture of this area.

Jesus. That poor family. I don’t know how you move in after something like that. I think I would have to be medicated for the rest of my life.

I don’t think you can truly move on if you focus on blaming someone else.

Blaming the cruise ship is disgusting. You picked a one-year-old up and put them on TOP of a railing meant to protect them from going outside of the area or ship. The fault is the family's and the family's alone.
