Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

Well, sounds like McCarthy is getting fed up with the Freedom Caucus. And the moderates are threatening that if the FC continues to be obstructive without being constructive that they may start negotiating with the Democrats to pass a CR without the rest of the party.

Already there have been discussions among the moderates about dusting off a discharge petition Democrats filed during the debt-limit standoff earlier this year and repurposing it for a CR, or engaging in other unorthodox legislative maneuvers to get to an up-or-down vote.

Some good news that this might not come to a shutdown after all.

This! I'm so tired of all the government employees that are deemed "essential" and then work without pay. How many other occupations would work without pay? If it's so essential, then you should get paid.
One day of no TSA, ATC, or federal firefighters would resolve this pretty quickly...

Yes. Most of the country feels zero impact of shut downs, because the services they use are still operational. They believe that their elected official is fighting the good fight against “government waste”.

100% agree. I feel really bad for the people who have to work without out pay. Many of them are low-payed (e.g. CBP officers, TSA agents) who are risking their lives. It costs money to work. You can't take leave that was previously planned-- vacations, doctor's appointments.

At the very least, they should close the parks and stop issuing passports.

They do the parks. Assuming you're talking about national parks.

What do you mean you can’t take leave previously planned? I will be on leave at that time

‘Bout time someone in that party awoke from their stupor and started governing.

I think this article is from before they couldn't even vote to discuss DOD spending....

That's when you know it's bad. The republican playbook last time was to fund DoD and then shut down the rest

They will force TSA to work unpaid.

This shouldn't happen. If they really want to shut down the govt, it should all be shut down and it would last exactly 12 hours when people wouldn't be able to fly anywhere. Then maybe Congress will stop using govt employees as pawns.

Leave is a govt obligation. If you are furloughed, it does'nt matter because you are not on work status. But if you are deemed essential, my understanding is that you are expected to work. But am not HR/your agency/OPM so check with them.

Essential employees have to request to be furloughed in the event they had leave planned during the shutdown.

If it actually happens, they’ll vote on a clean CR.

Exactly - people talk about lazy govt workers but they don’t realize what the government actually does. Stop the tsa, food safety inspections, stop processing Medicare claims, air traffic control, etc…
