Couldn't agree more. This spectacle has taken up way too much air time. I really hope this is the beginning of the end of the ridiculous institution that is the British Monarchy.

LOL based on the funeral alone, it's clear that's not happening any time soon.

My hope is we don't have to hear from you complaining about it.

Just go away already!

Huh? I ate it up. I was saying, judging by the extreme, EXTREME popularity of the Queen, based on the funeral alone, the monarchy clearly isn't going away anytime soon. I'm not complaining. I like the institution and the people.

I think the Queen holds a special place in their hearts because she has been around so long. They are watching history and want to be part of it. Charles does not have the respect of the British people the way the Queen did. I think reforms in the monarchy will be made, but it will happen at a slow pace - over the course of 50+ years.

He lost their respect when he wanted to be a tampon.

You are mistaken, vast majority think he will make a good King. He is much more popular than any of the politicians.

He has had some mobility issues lately. Perhaps that played a role in the decision.

I also think it would be strange for the Pope to attend. I realize we're 700ish years on from Henry VIII's break with Rome, but it's still a break that meant something and has repercussions to this day - i.e. - the monarch is the head of the Anglican church and not the Pope. And while we are all very ecumenical these days I don't think the Catholic Church has ever officially recognized the schism as valid.

Perfectly suitable for the Vatican to send high-level representatives, but not the Pope.

Didn’t one of the Queens kill Catholics or Protestants? Isn’t that where the term Bloody Mary came from?

Mary Tudor—the eldest child of Henry VIII and his only child with his first wife, Katherine of Aragon—was a staunch Catholic, like her mother. After watching Catholicism crumble under Henry and many Catholics persecuted and killed, she then swiftly reversed the nation back to Catholicism (to the degree she could) after the death of her younger brother, Edward, who was a teenager at the time of his death. Edward had succeeded Henry because he was male and because he was “legitimate” (born of Jane Seymour after Katherine and Anne Boleyn had died). Mary did indeed persecute and kill Protestants, and had many imprisoned in the Tower. She thus earned the name Bloody Mary.

Mary Tudor was succeeded by her sister, Elizabeth I, the daughter of Henry and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was a Protestant who found a way forward, which was essentially leaving it up to each individual whether they wanted to be Protestant or Catholic, saying “I would not look into a man’s soul.”

Today, the Catholic Church essentially sees the UK as the United States or any other democracy, where citizens are free to chose their religion, or none. So they no more would “snub” this event, but it’s also not likely the Pope would attend many non-Catholic monarch funerals unless he happened to be in the country or what have you.

Camila seems or appears much more meek and displaced in recent days than I feel we’ve previously seen her.

My heart was in my mouth each time they lifted it on / off the carriage.

This had to be an exhausting time. She's no spring chicken herself.

I loved the bread and circuses moment, though, just as I did with Philip's.

No, she won't be "popping up topside again."

The coffin was lowered to the level where there is another chapel, the King George VI Memorial chapel. It's where her father (you know...King George VI) is entombed along with her mother. The private service for close family only is held there and not in the nave of St. George's Chapel where today's service was held and from which the coffin descended.

So no "popping up" is required.

I'm no royal-lover, but I at least I know enough history not to gloat and crow childishly over inaccuracies.

Visited England about 5 years ago. Where her parents Andrew sister are buried is a very simple room. Not ornamental in any way, especially compared to previous monarchs. I wonder if the room wil be updated.

The whole place looks like it needs updating. The outside is missing bits of -- is it cement? The inside looks really old too -- which it is. The whole place looks shockingly real. I liked it.

I tried abc, nbc and cbs before switching to public television. Blessedly quiet. I don't know why they think we care what they have to say, when there is something 1,000 times more interesting going on. I guess they have to say something to earn their pay.

I hope they still come out to the balcony for Trooping the Colour. Nice link to the past.

I guess Charles's generation doesn't have as many cousins, right? Just Sarah Chatto and her brother?

Do they not have any first cousins from Philip’s side? From their aunts?

TONS of first cousins on his dad's side. I count 19, although some died very early.

I thought the same thing! It sounds so fake.

She needs to be fired. So annoying and fake.

Her smile is painful to look at. It's so fake and stretched to the sides of her face.

I think they're all scared sh&tless. It's one thing to be a prince and another to be the King. Holy crap, what a huge responsibility. I bet William is quivering in his boots, too.

She's also been standing/walking around in heels for days with a broken toe.

I agree. I think the crown should have been buried with her. Charles can get a new one.

The lack of even a scintilla of knowledge of history on this thread is mind boggling! If you had read a newspaper or read news on the Internet since her death on Sept. 8, every single aspect of her funeral has been covered and infinitum!

The crown does not belong to her. It is Crown property. The Crown Jewels are not the personal property of the monarch.

Good god people…..calm down. It was an emotional statement. Of course I know it can’t really be buried with her. I just hate to see it on Charles head.

Anonymous wrote:Someone upthread asked why there was not a similarly big to-do when her father died. People forget that England was really poor after the war. Everything was kind of frugal and stripped down.

Who said there wasn't a big to do? If you mean why it wasn't on TV and the internet 24/7 in 1952, I am not sure I can help with that.

Check out this article - the amount of to do seems remarkably similar:

The news organizations have been making a big deal of how many hundreds of years it’s been since a monarch had a funeral service at Westminster. I guess they’ve mostly just used Windsor.
