Queen Elizabeth Funeral

It is strange they delay it so long. Elizabeth waited - what - 15 months?

Once again, all was explained in mind numbing detail in print and on air. There is a period of mourning. The new king's coronation will probably be in summer of 2023. This delay gives him a chance to get used to his new responsibilities and gives the country time to get used to a new monarch.

Listen and learn. Read and learn..

Does anyone now anything about the wreath of flowers that was on the coffin today? It was incredible. Wondering if the flowers held any symbolism?

My heart was in my mouth each time they lifted it on / off the carriage.

They are well trained.

I heard the flowers, at least some, were selected by Charles from the Queen’s garden.

Watching Charles stand there like a statue while all of Westminster Abbey belted out God Save the King gave me chills. If it was weird for me, he must have felt utterly surreal, at the close of his indomitable mother's funeral while everyone bellows, "long may he reign."

He has had some mobility issues lately. Perhaps that played a role in the decision.

I also think it would be strange for the Pope to attend. I realize we're 700ish years on from Henry VIII's break with Rome, but it's still a break that meant something and has repercussions to this day - i.e. - the monarch is the head of the Anglican church and not the Pope. And while we are all very ecumenical these days I don't think the Catholic Church has ever officially recognized the schism as valid.

Perfectly suitable for the Vatican to send high-level representatives, but not the Pope.

Well we broke from England too and the Bidens still went.

Joe Biden isn't head of a religious denomination that still maintains the state church is illegitimate. It's not the same.

+1 and additionally, no US President met with a King or Queen on England until 1918. There were definitely grudges.

I loved the bread and circuses moment, though, just as I did with Philip's.

No, she won't be "popping up topside again."

The coffin was lowered to the level where there is another chapel, the King George VI Memorial chapel. It's where her father (you know...King George VI) is entombed along with her mother. The private service for close family only is held there and not in the nave of St. George's Chapel where today's service was held and from which the coffin descended.

So no "popping up" is required.

I'm no royal-lover, but I at least I know enough history not to gloat and crow childishly over inaccuracies.

Visited England about 5 years ago. Where her parents Andrew sister are buried is a very simple room. Not ornamental in any way, especially compared to previous monarchs. I wonder if the room wil be updated.

What? Whose parents and who is Andrew?

Not PP but I think PP meant “where [Elizabeth’s] parents and her sister are buried.”

Honestly, I don't think that the pope normally goes to state funerals, anyway. His visits take months to plan and his job is to minister to his flock, not to attend funerals.

It's the flag of the House of Windsor.

This was a worship service to the monarchy, not a funeral

No, it isn't. It is the Royal Standard, the flag of the monarch (who may, or may not, be of the House of Windsor).

A previous poster asked about the wreath. The flowers came from some of the queen's gardens and was constructed entirely using natural materials such as moss and oak twigs (so no florist foam or wire) as it is being left in the crypt with her casket. It contained rosemary (for remembrance) and myrtle that was cut from a plant that had been grown from a sprig from her wedding bouquet.

I was just thinking, I hope there were some granola bars in those cars.

Good thing the royal children are not the offspring of DCUM Moms, who are convinced that their progeny will wither and die on the vine if they don’t have a snack every 2-3 hours.

I think 20th century geopolitics caused the U.S. and Great Britain to be united on many fronts. PPs talking about breaking from Britain are leaving out being allies in WW! and WW2. Those events closer in memory to our time rather than the American Revolution.

William and Harry (when not in uniform) have also been wearing blue suits this entire time, while the women have worn black. It’s clearly some sort of protocol.

Then why black pants and blue jacket for George?
Charlotte is just the cutest. Proud parents for sure.

I don’t know, but regardless of your thoughts on Kate, I am 100% sure she dressed him appropriately and as was expected for his age.

You seem a little triggered. Maybe catch a nap?

Np pp was being polite and asking you both to move along. The blue jacket was appropriate I am very sure. Are you going to accuse me of "being triggered?"

No one who is not the site owner should be “asking (anyone) to move along.” Who the hell do you people think you are?
