UVA Early Action

2 of my 3 applied there and were admitted. Of those 2, 1 took MV and 1 took Stat after BC instead. If the rest of your DD's schedule remains rigorous, I wouldn't worry about it. Also, there are 2 classes of MV at our HS so plenty of students take it. If not engineering/math track, stat seems more useful imo.

Checking off the "most rigorous" box is also often discussed on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/cql1ua/how_do_i_know_if_i_am_taking_the_most_rigorous/

Reddit isn't exactly the horse's mouth when it comes to admissions.

I am the parent who was spooked by "most rigorous box" by this site, and feared DC would not get into UVA ED. DC has MV for senior year, but English was all over the place, with reg and honors and only trying AP English for senior year. Counselor in junior year would not committ to checking most rigorous box, because no AP english junior year, and likely annoyed I would ask which box he would check.

Fast forward to present day. Applied ED to VT, got in. Will never know about UVA, as withdrew application.

Lesson learned? Stop reading dcum.

But you learned about the box here. And you are still here.

TJ maybe. Any places, hard to believe.

No, All competitive publics offer multi calculus. If offered and not taken, then the counselor won’t check off the “most rigorous “ box.

Are you sure about that? No one needs MV in high school, and most don't even need it in college. Math isn't the only rigorous track in high school. You are suggesting that a humanities student could never get the check, and that just isn't true.

It’s funny how STEM people are just positive that higher level STEM classes are the only way to show advanced work. My kids’ strength is in the Humanities. Both have taken 5+ yrs. of foreign language and all AP English and history.

Reddit surpassed College Confidential for numbers of posts on college and universities about three years ago.that’s where the students go to exchange information

If it's on the internet, it must be true.

So your kid had MV, but still didn’t get the most rigorous box due to English? What about history and science?

I have one senior and one younger child, and by the time he goes he’ll probably need a PhD in math to get into UVA.

“Most rigorous” is not a binary answer.

Pretty sure the admissions counselors decide for themselves what is the most rigorous program and don't just blindly take a counselor's check.

At our Maryland public, the counselor told us they check most rigorous of they have 4 AP or honors classes every semester. Doesn’t matter which classes.

It is hard to get much info out of a public school counselor.
When I asked the counselor if he could check most rigorous box, he said NO, because there was no AP English. DC had AP history and all honor science classes and AP CS. So I said, how about DC takes AP English senior year, and I never got a response. Pandemic hit, everything got whacky, SAT testing got delayed multiple times, eventually got it done this fall, got 1540, never heard back from the counselor. Did not push it. Also, counselor said DC gpa was at around 35% of class--which I have a hard time believing. But this was based only on 9th and 10th grade GPA, no junior and senior.

VT is likely better fit for my DC, so all is well.

I am just saying there is so much build up around UVA, that someone with a decent shot should go for it. We just got spooked and wanted an ED acceptance and be done.

Agree with the counselor. In FCPS, there are kids in the four AP core courses both junior and senior year, as well as a few AP electives throughout. Tech is a great school though. No worries.

True, the one thing that Dean J often stresses though is that she likes to see a diversity of AP taken, so not all science, or all math, or all english. My kid took 9 APs (5 senior year), but only 2 were in STEM classes (AP Bio and AP Calc AB). He's been taking AP history or gov since he could and taken all the highest english classes. He is also taking AP Spanish. This is not a STEM major, and it was enough to get him into UVA without it being THE most rigorous he could take with regard to Math and Science. He did take a DE Pre-Calc last year, not sure how that is counted. He will be an international relations major.
