I’ve chaperoned groups of high school students to the Holocaust Museum and they still need to be reminded not to talk loud and laugh - and this is inside the museum. These kids were outside the Memorial on the steps when another group walked into the area where they were congregating. Phillips was apparently looking for more publicity and certain members of the media - who hate Trump, MAGA, pro-lifers, and white conservatives generally - were more than happy to oblige.

You are leaving out the fact that the kids gathered around and started heckling the African Israelites. When you chaperone kids, do you allow them to start taunting other groups?

On DCUM I always read various conservative posters claim that we in DC live in a bubble. I would argue there are many bubbles in the US and these boys live in one. I grew up surrounded by reservations in the Southwest. I have interacted with tribal members my entire life. My parents would have been furious if I had acted like those boys, which I would have never done because tribal members were people in my community. This also goes for my Mexican neighbors, who were friends not rapists! I think they is my biggest problem with MAGA folks, their community is limited to white people and everyone else is considered a threat and less than outsiders. They don’t view others as fellow Americans. It’s their bubble.

This is how I see it as well. I fault the chaperones who should have intervened at that point, if not before.

I blame the chaperones, as well. I was very disappointed two years ago when my middle schooler (NoVA public school) went on a field trip to DC and came home telling me that many of his classmates were harassing a large group of kids from another part of the country, also there on a field trip. Many kids were wearing MAGA hats. These local 8th graders were yelling at them, calling them derogatory names from across the street and physically trying to block them when their paths met on a sidewalk.

I asked him what the chaperones did and he said they did nothing, but some were sheepishly laughing. Unacceptable and a poor representation of our area.

Look, there are lots of crazy people protesting in DC. The locals know it and know not to confront them. The "old dude" is no jerk. He knows all of that. He comes to DC a lot and has been around the block more than a few times (including in Viet damn Nam). The boys did not know any of that and apparently they were not clued in by their school or chaperones on how to stay away from protesters. The "old dude" may have been trying to get the kids to stop paying attention to the black Israelites . . . who knows. In any case, there was no reason for them to treat the "old dude" that way.
