It’s what, 2 hours a day over 7 days? That’s the equivalent of 2 instructional days. I think they still have plenty of hours built in that it won’t be affected by snow. |
This had nothing to do with teacher absenteeism or teachers not being willing to work. It had to do with the massive inequality when it comes to elementary teacher planning time. Elementary teachers have considerably less planning time and the county has been trying to address that for a while. |
They should vote. My point is the parents who FCPS takes for granted will “adjust” (direct quote from school board member) will still remember that school board members callousness when it comes to elections down the line. |
The reason given for not doing this on Friday was teacher absenteeism. |
… and teachers should be able to get more done during the work day. As it is, we already expect teachers to get their planning, grading, reporting, and emailing done on their own time. They get very little time, even at the high school level with 140-150 students, to do the behind-the-scenes work that makes a class run successfully. Teachers end up doing most of that at night and over the weekend. This provides teachers with time AT work to do work. Ultimately, that’s how you’ll get teachers to stay. |
Why would it be better for a teacher to do this work-at-work on a Monday afternoon than a Friday afternoon? |
The day doesn’t matter to me at all. As long as it isn’t Saturday or Sunday from home. |
LOL. of course. So make it the most inconvenient option for parents and families because that's the only time teachers would show up. Love the family friendly school system. |
This was the reason that was given on DCUM or from a credible source? Did FCPS run a report on PTO and determine that the day teachers most often taken off was Friday? |
What has given you the impression in the past that school is supposed to be family-friendly? Because that’s what YOU would like it to be? |
On DCUM. The schools of course have given no justification for their choice which is why, again, people are enraged about it. They act as though they are, or should be, unaccountable for their choices. |
Parents are the lowest on the totem pole of stakeholders. It’s been this way for a while. 1. National and State agencies for example: DOE/ VDOE 2. Teachers and Staff 3. School Board 4. Students 5. Parents |
They don’t need to be accountable to parents for this decision. Even when it comes to the school board, FCPS is allowed to make operational decisions without the school boards approval. |
This works great for our family. We plan on using these long weekends to travel or just enjoy Mondays off. Inconvenient would be doing it in the middle of the week |
They absolutely need to be accountable to parents, or give up on the idea parents need to “support” them. What happened in Loudon is a great example of what will happen if the trend continues. |
