Any Parents Privately Disappointed with College Placement?

Anonymous
Glad you stepped up and acknowledged your inconsiderate snobbery. Incorrect that I am defending my son. Glad to defend two boys who are great young men and who will make STA proud. Do not buy for a second that the "disappointment" related to IU is not disparaging of the two boys. Sometimes, you folks just can't get away with saying it is "not about the young men." The college decision made by kids of this age is the biggest one they have made to date. To say it is somehow disappointing is incredibly callous and elitist. Shame on you folks who put down the school choice and by extension the boys themselves.

My DCs public school typically has 25-30 going to Ivy League schools and many many more going to top colleges. My public school DC is applying to much more competitive colleges than I did as a big 3 grad. The counseling is pretty hands off compared to private schools yet the kids still do extremely well in admissions.

Urban myth. Not even top preps have that many.

NP here. Actually, not urban myth. Public schools have larger classes, so it stands to reason that more kids go to top colleges. Columbia alone accepted 12 from DC's MoCo public this year, although maybe half will matriculate there. I don't know if my kid is at the same MoCo public as PP's, or how kids at other MoCo publics are doing.

Who are you one of the school's college counselors?

Nope not a counselor but have had access to naviance and yes the kids all know where everyone is going and who is legacy. In fact, it is even easy to suss out who has donated a building or endowed a chair. And yes they are often the outliers on naviance.

WTF are you talking about, you continue to harp on about these young men. No one has said a negative word about them. Get a grip, why can't the pp who posted that he's disappointed be allowed to do so, that is the point of this thread.

And to be honest, I don't know anyone who went through the entire independent school process (from wppsi-SATs) with the dream/goal of their son ultimately graduating from STA and choosing to matriculate at Indiana-Bloomington. It's a great thing that they're venturing out and taking a different path, doesn't that make them leaders?

These two young men are of the highest character and displayed on the athletic fields and in the life of the school consistently positive leadership. Having seen these young men as teammates and friends of my sons, it makes me furious to see their choice of college considered "disappointing" in some way. Both young men had several options and considered Indiana to be the best fit on multiple levels. Those of you who sneered at their college choice would be absolutely delighted to have either of these young men date your daughters. Of course, you may only let your daughters date boys from "certain" colleges. Let us hear how that strategy plays out.

You’re being naïve. I’m the PP who attended IU. My 15 nieces and nephews who live in IN all attend IU or Purdue. Both schools are filled with Indiana HS grads and Chicago suburb grads. To quote my niece to my DCs, “you must be poor because your neighborhood doesn’t have all white people”. My favorite is that the kids think any Asian looking person must be an international student. It’s not just my nieces and nephews, it’s Indiana. IU will not be a good fit for a STA grad. You have no idea how limited the thinking is. I wish them the best.

Well, now that the PP decided to drag Purdue into this mix, as a Purude grad...I've got to say ENOUGH already! This line of attack is ridiculous. YES, I didn't go to STA but instead, a plain old "Indiana HS". Can you imagine! Well, somehow, someway, I've ended up lviing in the nationa's captial. My earnings last year were 700,00 plus! My house is worth well over 1million. My kis went to Europe this year....can someone please tell me...where did I go so wrong with a Purdue degree??????

So since you've got so much access, let's put some real numbers to this. Out of an average graduating class at STA, how many were accepted at top colleges because of legacy benefits, who did not deserve to be there? You wrote that "legacies play a big part" in the school's college admissions success: How big in real numbers?

Many students from MoCo public schools do really well in college admissions.

You're what in your 30s, 40s, 50s? This is a new day!

I got that both IU and Purdue are local feeder schools straight from non-diverse high schools. The best to any STA grad in trying to fit into these settings.

As a parent, I would be concerned whether or not IU high school grads have comparable academic stats (gpa & scores) in comparison to my son's. As a pp stated they're attending for a specific programs.

Anyone who denies that Indiana is a disappointment for a STA grad is blowing smoke. That doesn't mean Indiana is a horrible school - just not what you hope for after STA.

These schools are all excellent schools, but it's important to bear in mind that they are all roughly 4x the size of the largest coed independent schools and close to 5X the size of the single-sex independents. This means that the numbers of students going to Ivies (which PP is using as a somewhat inaccurate and incomplete proxy of selectivity) are not in the same proportion as the the numbers going from the independent schools. For example, in recent years Sidwell, with a graduating class size of approximately 125 has had 15-20 students going to Ivies. Compare this outcome to the numbers cited by PP above for graduating classes of 500 from Churchill, 490 from RM (including approx 140 in the IB program), 520 from WJ, and 575 from Wooton.

PP 19:51 here – I forgot the best fact about IU – the sororities are all divided into the white girl sororities, AA sororities, Jewish (from Chicago burbs), and Asian sororities. I’ve mentioned to my nieces and their friends that this was odd and their responses are always that AAs, Jewish girls and the Asians want their own sororities. They think nothing wrong or odd about this. The girls don’t even rush together. I think it’s sad.

Sounds like the townies (Hoosiers) are in the majority. So if this level and attitude of segregation is still in place, it's a redneck school.
