That's my takeaway (pun sorta intended) too. No matter where you fall on the tipping for counter service debate, if you're worried that tipping an extra buck or two might cause your account to be overdrawn, you shouldn't be eating out. Full stop. |
I have also atopped tipping in carryout orders. This is getting to be too much. This wasn’t the norm that we tip on carryout orders before Covid and so have not done so now that all is open. I can’t believe this RI article and what happened there. That is so entitled. |
| OH HECK NO. Don't ever go there again. ALSO please name the place that did this. |
This! I don’t think it’s my job to support a whole industry. Why stop at industry x and why not industry y? It’s a slippery slope. |

Why are there tips on the card reader now when I go to a sandwich shop. This is a new development, even Subway has a tip screen.
Is the supermarket next, the auto mechanic, clothing stores? Where is this going and where does it end? Will any purchase made by credit have this new screen option? Will even online purchases? Will Amazon request a tip when I buy something? Are we turning into something like Jamaica, the tip culture there is really aggressive and I hated it. |

How about the restaurants pay a living wage to those they employ and then tipping would be used when the service provided is excellent.
I provide a tip when I go out. I get people are upset though. Example: I don’t want to tip at the Yogi castle where I literally did everything. |
OP, I bet you don't tip the cashiers at Target and Safeway either. How can you be so ungracious? |
You shouldn't be patronizing union busting Starbucks |
Usually, no tipped employee involved in a take out order. |
| I used to be a very generous tipper, but lately our order at our favorite take out place costs almost double what it did preCOVID (and we went overboard supporting them through COVID), and now we can't really afford it. I started lowering the tip, since the percentage on double the cost of the exact same order was getting ridiculous, especially for take out. But that made me feel bad. So, now we hardly go there anymore. |
| I know lot here like to tip for takeout and keep justifying though they make decent wages 15-17/ hour. I am sure a lot of DCUM does not know that in healthcare when you go to hospitals, nursing home the aides who take care of patients or the nurses hardly get paid enough for their job. Especially CNA’s and they can’t accept tips. The CNAs might make same or less than the take out workers. LPN nurses might make 22-25/ hour standing on their leg all day and can’t accept tips. I am sure DCUM will say they getting paid for what they do but for what a CNA the aide do they all should get paid more but they system do not. People talking about inflation adjustment but most healthcare workers pay stay the same even after 10 years . That’s why hospitals and nursing home struggle with staffing issues but the same DCUM people demand highest level service . I think it’s absurd to ask a LPN nurse to top 10$ for her every take out order . So it’s not like only take out workers are working . I’m not saying you should tip or normalize tipping healthcare workers. But I want to point out that healthcare workers don’t get paid enough to do the job. No one can change it or voice out. Just a thought |
Qearenh, is that you? |

I went to a little local bakery a couple weeks ago. It is counter only service. I spent $73 on 16 baked goods. One person put them in a couple boxes. The other person rang me up. Then she spun the monitor around and it had tip options. I tapped No Tip. It’s ridiculous that that a counter only bakery even has top options on it.
I want to support local businesses and don’t mind paying a premium on locally made goods but then turn around and ask me to tip for putting stuff in a box? No way. It’s out of control. |
So true. And also EMT’s make low wages too. |
