Chastised for not tipping on a to go order

Anonymous
I walked up to hostess stand, placed an order for soup and a sandwich, and told them I’d be back in 15 min- running a quick errand next door.
Server rang up my bill and I signed receipt, told her I’d be back soon.
I used a gift card. She said “tip isn’t included, so you can either leave that with another card or cash”
I looked at her , nodded politely and left.
Did not sit at a table, did not drink water. I literally left for 15 min and came back.
My food was waiting in the to go bag on the stand. A different server called my name and handed me the bag.
I said thank you! And walked away.
The original server walked over and said wait stop!
I walked back thinking that I forgot something.
She said loudly: “you didn’t tip.”
I said, I’m aware, thank you. And left.

When did tipping culture become so bold that people are demanding and expecting tips on a straight take out order?
I almost want to call the restaurant and say something to the manager because I find this inappropriate.

I would. Also I would leave a review (with your name signed to it for credibility).

I find it annoying myself that you can't leave a tip from a gift card but I've been told at restaurants that there's just no way. So I give them some cash, even on a take out order. I've worked in restaurants and I know that a tipped employee typically has to prepare a take out order, so I leave them a tip.

On the other hand, when I worked at Outback years ago if anybody had said to a customer under any circumstances "You didn't leave a tip" they would have been fired on the spot. Most good restaurants operate that way.

What restaurant?

I would email the restaurant and let them know. There is no need to tip on carry out.

Watch The Bear on Hulu and you’ll see how takeout orders are actually a decent amount of work. Just tip a few bucks.

I have drawn a hard line on what I will and will not tip for.

Take out is a no. Starbucks is a no. Any counter service is a no. Any professional service provided by the business owner is a no.

I will tip restaurant servers, bartenders, my barber, taxi/Lyft, food DELIVERY.

You’re an a** not to tip but you’ve convinced yourself that your outrage is justified.

Your “hard line” is arbitrary and stupid.

You were both rude. You are supposed to tip on takeout. The server was also rude for asking directly for a tip.

Me too. But, at some point enough is enough.

Cheap a$$ho!es that don't tip a measly $5 for takeout orders. Maybe you can't afford to eat out and need to eat at home.

op isn’t an ass. It’s takeout. It wasn’t delivered. She wasn’t served. Preparing takeout orders is not the job of someone earning 2.35 an hour or whatever the tipped wage is. Op is completely right. And whoever demanded a tip needs to be corrected or fired
