+1 Just finished reading OP's post and have been thinking what an obnoxious, unkind, and entitled way of acting from placing the order to now considering a way to embarrass the employee and possobly cause that person to lose his/her job. I cannot imagine going through life treating other people so callously.

You don’t consider the employee obnoxious unkind and entitled for demanding a tip?

Restaurant owner here-- you don't tip on carry out. If you want to that is great but my employees involved in any carry out order are earning $17+/hr (hostess, chef, gm usually handles phones and is salaried). It is definitely not expected. We do pool tips though so that everyone in a tipped job gets a percentage of tips. If you do tip on a carry out it goes back to my employees who likely didn't do anything for your order.

Surprised at everyone saying they tip on carry out. I’ve never done so and didn’t think it was the norm at all. (And yes, I tip housekeeping staff in hotels.)

Either an entitled waitress or one that's on the spectrum with rigid rules.

I would have responded in the same way, OP.

PP here. Nope! Just frustrated and probably tired.

Question for you owner - when you swipe a card does it prompt you for a tip? Because that might be why people are doing it.

OP initiated the sequence of events with her cheapness and entitled attitude.

No, OP tried to use a gift card. The employee’s first concern was what about a tip. The employee was wrong and should be separated from the employer. And if OP doesn’t get an apology, OP should detail the experience in a Yelp review to warn others.

Dou you leave a tip when you pick up your coffee at Starbuck? When you eat at McDonalds?

I leave at least 10% and usually 20.

No, the OP used a gift card and did not intend to leave a tip.

Which is entirely appropriate and keeping with norms for tipping culture. Don’t flip over the iPad and start tipping suggestions at 25%. Just, no. You are doing your job to package my food that I drove to collect. You didn’t serve me for half an hour or whatever. And you don’t make a tipped wage.

I sleep like a baby because I am 100% correct. There’s nothing to “come around.” I mean, this isn’t even a debate. You’re just flat out, indisputably wrong.
