Set proper expectations with your DDs and have realistic expectations for yourselves.

Capital is not going to build a team from scratch based on a 2-3 hour tryout. That’s barely enough time between water breaks to see any meaningful player time for 100+ kids. They already know who the top players are in the incoming freshman class. The reality of the tryout is to finalize the last few spots.

I have a 2030 girl so I don’t really understand how this works. Capital Blue takes 4 or so each from BLC, Pride, Stars, and Next Level? And where do the other 20 or so from their teams go?

Capital will take the top players regardless of club affiliation. It would be an unlikely scenario where an equal number come from 4 MS clubs. Historically, Capital has had a good idea which players they will add long before tryouts. There are usually a few spots open for 100+ kids trying out to fill.

Those who don’t make Capital Blue will go to Capital Orange or various other clubs.

The Top players (eg. American Select, UA150 quality) who don't make Capital rarely go to Cap Orange. They often go to Pride or some 2nd tier MD clubs like MDU, Integrity, CCLax, etc.

Well, speaking on 2027s, MDU light years better than integrity and CCLax, and better in general. It would be a very good landing spot for anyone coming from NVA.

This really depends on the year. Generally, yes. As others have posted on this forum the one exception where Pride was equal in talent on the field to Capital Blue was their 2023 team. That Pride team chose to stay together. But this was unusual.

Both Capital Blue and Pride Black played in the top brackets of tournaments that year and both had extremely high strength of schedules - top 5. The difference in those two teams was Pride had no clue how the recruiting scene worked and their players paid a steep price as a result.

Go to whatever team your DD can make that will play in the top brackets, plays a tough SoS, and the club has had proven recruiting success. If playing at a high level in college is the end goal.

Pride 23 routinely lost to Cap 23 so not quite accurate to say they were equal in talent.

These two teams only met once as Capital vs Pride that I’m aware of. It was a close game. The players who went on to make up these teams played a few times prior as Pride and Stars. Pride won those games. When 3 of the Pride 2023 players earn Player of the Year Awards this year and many were recognized as All Met I’d say they were a talented group.

Cap Blue 23 beat Pride 23 Black twice during their club careers. Cap beat them by three in ‘21 and by five in ‘22. Cap has even rotations. Pride played never took their starters off the field.

Which tournament did these two teams play in during 2022? US Club Lacrosse shows they played once during their high school seasons.

So Pride didn't make one substitution the whole game? Not even one? Thats bananas. They really must have wanted to beat Capital.

Not unusual for Pride and many other DMV programs to keep their starters on the field. Those programs generally have a talent curve and weight playing time toward the starters to give them a better chance of staying in games and getting their starters recruited. Capital attracts better overall talent and therefore has
more depth and can use even rotations to be competitive and commit more players to D1 programs. This is proven by the fact Cap Blue has more All Mets and more All Americans than Pride.

Yea, wow. Really good points. Do you think someone should tell the Pride coach that making a substitution or two might help to keep them fresh? Or does only Capital have a line on that strategy (its brilliant). I mean, no substitutions at all in two games against Capital? What were they thinking?

Just spitballin’ but I’m guessing Pride ‘23 thought their best chance at beating Capital Blue ‘23 was to play their best players the vast majority of the game. Same approach used by just about every high school in the country. Pride ‘23 wanted to win those games - badly - to validate their decision to stay together and notch a stat to show they were as good as the best in the DMV. But Pride lost both of those matchups to a team that doesn’t follow a starter model and rotates their players every three minutes to give them all equal college recruiting exposure. Pride’s best wasn’t enough to beat Capital’s even rotations.

We can see you’re still sore about it.

This started with a claim that the two teams were equally talented. They weren’t.

You've extended this dumb narrative even further. But congrats on that amazing team that won by 3 and 5. For your sake, Im certain those Pride girls feel as ashamed as you'd like them to. You can rest easy.

With previous years, we found stars to be a good place to be in terms of making capital bc of the coaching connections with the team. Everyone assumes the BLC girls will make CLC Blue but there isn’t an historical pipeline there.

Anonymous
I understand that this BLC team is much more highly ranked than previous grad years, so of course BLC girls will make CLC Blue. But I would be shocked if it is the whole team.

Hopefully everyone makes the team they are aiming for and I am wrong that there are other factors besides player merit involved, but definitely good to have a backup plan.
Anonymous
It seems BLC and Stars both have some level of "pipeline" to Capital. If we're talking actual talent, Pride just beat BLC 10-5 and both Pride and BLC are a step or two above Stars. I would still rank BLC slightly ahead of Pride because they play the top teams a little closer for whatever reason. Either way, if we're talking talent, the 27 Capital team should be very close BLC and Pride as far as numbers. Stars should be in the back with maybe a few. If we're talking politics and connections, just put 11 Stars girls and 11 BLC girls on the top team and be done with it. Good luck beating M&D with that line up though.

Wonder what those scores would have been had Capital’s starters matched the same number of minutes as Pride’s starters.

That’s because US Club Lax removed 23 scores for all teams for the 2021-2022 season. President’s Cup.

Agree about that. However, at this age, it would be very hard for a girl not good enough to make Capital Blue to be able to break into MDU.

How is this relevant to 2027 girls? Revisiting what happened to the 2023 girls and the details of their games isn’t helpful.

I think defense could be the X factor in tryouts. Across BLC, Stars and Pride, there aren't close to 8 defenders at "Capital quality", so the question will be how Capital manages this. Will they bring in extra middies and then move them to D?

They don’t take more than 5-6 defenders. There’s plenty and BLC and Pride to fill those.

Interesting, I don’t believe the 2023 class played in the 2022 Presidents Cup. Probably explains why you know so little about that Pride team.

Stars also has one very strong defender.
