I think Rice is going to be SOS. I think he's going to pick Whitmer but have an extremely diverse cabinet to unveil simultaneously.

Has a president ever simultaneously announced cabinet members? I think you want to focus on the president/VP and trust their judgment to pick the best cabinet. You don’t want to vote for a committee - it looks weak.

I know it feels like this is taking forever (I thought so too) but this is totally normal. Obama and Clinton each announced their running mates only 2-3 days before the first day of the convention.

Yes, but their prospects were not trashed in the press the way the women have been. And remember the convention was pushed back almost a month already.

Heh? The 2008 Democratic Convention started August 25.

Heh? 20016 was a month earlier and this year's was supposed to be too.

Just saying it’s not like it’s October 15th or anything.

Okay, fair enough. I'm also concerned Trump raised more money than Biden last month. We need to get this show on the road!

This would only be an appropriate strategy for damage control if the pick is white. I don't think that will be the case though.

There are several exciting black women as options - i highly doubt he’s going to pass over them for a first term governor of Michigan (a state he ought to win even without picking Whitmer, but doesn’t even need to win).

Why is Whitmer "risky" and Grisham not risky? Weird.

DP. Maybe, because Grisham is likeable.

I know sexists love to talk about likability with women - but why is Gretchen Whitmer not likable exactly?

It’s “not that woman” sexism. A good example is a few years ago, 2016 to be exact, when Hillary was running and Bernie Bros liked to say they supported women in office, just not that woman. They’d support someone like Elizabeth Warren, for example, “yeah, she’d be perfect; I’d vote for her if she was running!” Fast forward to 2020 with Elizabeth Warren running: “I’d support women running for office, just not that woman.”

In short: there will be a sexist contingent that will immensely dislike the woman nominated for VP, but they’ll swear they’d vote for that other woman who isn’t nominated. That’s not to say that there won’t be downsides to whoever gets the pick, just as there are downsides to every single politician in the world (or Donald Trump who occupies the weird space in which he is all downside, no upside), but that we just need to tune it out and support the pick.

I thought Biden had actually outraised Trump but admittedly I’m not following that closely.

And it’s easy for Trump to raise money when he’s laundering it in from Russia and UAE.

Right, but normally you don’t want to announce the VP pick a month before the convention. You want they to speak in a controlled environment immediately after they are introduced to maximize the good exposure and limit the chances for negative stories.

This is the rumor yesterday on twitter, so take that with a grain of salt. But this was the explanation as to why Buttigieg was in DE yesterday

Seriously? Way to prove PP's suggestion that sexist people talk about likability with women

Not sexist. There are plenty of men that are not likeable.

The problem is that the majority of the leading candidates are very risky in different ways. Harris, Warren, Bass, Rice, Whitmer and Demings are all very risky.

Duckworth and Lujan Grisham are the least risky of the leading contenders.

Why is Whitmer "risky" and Grisham not risky? Weird.

Race is a huge part of it. You may not have realized, but the nation is currently facing a large racial divide. While neither candidate is black, which is where the greatest impact would be, Whitmer is a white American with no minority status at all. Lujan Grisham is of Latino descent and part of a very large political family that has several generations of "Latino firsts" in politics and New Mexican history. They have been historic in keeping Latino issues and priorities moving forward in the Southwest. Whitmer, does not add any minority representation or credentials to the ticket. For those who want to see more minority representation, they first and foremost want to see a black candidate, but if he is not going to pick a black candidate, at least they want to see a POC, so Duckworth and Lujan Grisham both check off minority status. Yes, it is identity politics, but identity politics may be especially crucial this year with the race riots achieving new heights.

Also Lujan Grisham's is far more experienced where it matters. In addition to both serving as successful governors responding to the pandemic crisis, Lujan Grisham also spent several years as the NM secretary of health. Lujan Grisham served three terms in Congress including several years as the head of the US House of Representatives Hispanic Caucus. She has both federal and state experience. Whitmer has only state experience (albeit a lot of it) and no federal experience. If Biden is looking for someone to be a bridge to the Congress, then Lujan Grisham has several years experience and many personal connections with sitting Congressman to rely on. Whitmer has no national level experience and no ties to anyone in Congress in either house. It is risky to bring someone with no federal experience to Washington and having them serve as the liason to Congress and the President of the Senate.

You may not have noticed, but women are underrepresented in all aspects of leadership in public life and private industry. ALL women are underrepresented minorities in politics. Further, the Hispanic community is not a monolith. Lujan Grisham is Basque, blond, green-eyed, doesn't speak Spanish (or Portuguese). She is actually NOT Latina. She is Hispanic, because her descendants came from Spain. Her lived experience is very different from the lives of many Hispanic women in this country, and clearly different from many Latinas (of which she is not). Whitmer is practically joined at the hip with Elissa Slotkin, she has resources from which to draw on, if she is VP. Moreover, Biden knows everyone in Congress, so it's unclear he needs that in a Veep. Men are allowed to rise from governorships to be president or vice president - we seem to be manufacturing a different standard for women - that's risky.

What does Pete have to do with it? Pete is not going to be the VP nominee. It’s not like Biden wants us to forget he promised he would choose a woman - he’s totally committed to it. Biden’s emails keep mentioning that we’ll soon meet the “woman” who will be his VP.

Rice for Sec Def. She is super qualified. And it would be wonderful to have a woman and a POC in that role. She’d do a great job and it’s more in the area she shines.

Kamala for AG

Duckworth for VP. Hard for Trump to attack her military record. Really, hard for Trump to attack her at all without looking line a bone spur loser.

Warren for Treasury or— hear me out— Education. Education in the era of COVID, universities folding, distance learning, student loan debt crisis is a massive job and she has the qualifications.

Buttigieg for VA.

I think Klobucher gets Sec of State for endorsing early and loudly and pulling herself out the the VP running early. There was a deal there of some sort.

What’s Booker’s natural fit?

I don't know what you're arguing with me for. When Pete was seen in delaware yesterday there was some twitter chatter about it and then there was a rumor that he was announcing his cabinet simultaneously. I'm not saying that's true, but just that it is a rumor. Take it or leave it. I never implied at all I thought Buttigieg was in on the VP race.

Sure, she is. "Bowe Bergdahl served with honor and distinction."
