I know it feels like this is taking forever (I thought so too) but this is totally normal. Obama and Clinton each announced their running mates only 2-3 days before the first day of the convention.

Wouldn't the veep nominee choose the chief of staff?

I think they want to hit the ground running since this is going to be a strange campaigning season b/c of COVID, also because it looks like Whitmer is the pick, they want to surround her with insiders, including women of color, to help ease the transition to the national stage.

Yes, the Jean-Pierre pick does not necessarily mean the VP pick is Black by any means. But I think a PP made an interesting point that Wed night speaker line-up is mostly white, which could point to a Black VP pick.

Yeah if a white woman were the pick the Wed night lineup would be as diverse as possible, and would include a Clyburn or Bass speaking in support of her. The pick is definitely a Black woman.

Yes, but their prospects were not trashed in the press the way the women have been. And remember the convention was pushed back almost a month already.

Heh? The 2008 Democratic Convention started August 25.

It certainly has become a negative spectacle! But my point was that it’s normal to announce it a few days before the convention, whenever that is. We’ve had nominating conventions in September in recent history.

Heh? 20016 was a month earlier and this year's was supposed to be too.

I think Rice is going to be SOS. I think he's going to pick Whitmer but have an extremely diverse cabinet to unveil simultaneously.

Right, but normally you don’t want to announce the VP pick a month before the convention. You want they to speak in a controlled environment immediately after they are introduced to maximize the good exposure and limit the chances for negative stories.

Just saying it’s not like it’s October 15th or anything.
