The numbers are so high of individuals crossing that the assets that would usually do interdiction of alien smuggling, narcotics smuggling, etc., are being pulled away to handle the processing and the care of these individuals that are turning themselves in at the border.

DP. Family reunification is an entirely legal means of immigration. If you do not legal status in this country, your relatives are not eligible for immigration via family reunification.

I am a legal immigrant (employment based) and I support ending the visa lottery (brings tons of unqualified people without a lick of English) and setting stricter criteria for family reunification. Many well off families bring their parents, who later get SSI, Medicaid, subsidized housing. The epitome of that is a woman I know renting her condo out to her parents via section 8.

The reason we can't have a barrier on the Texas border is because the Rio Grande River is the border. We have a treaty from about 1970 that prevents either country from building any obstruction in the flood plain of the Rio Grande because, duh, that would cause massive flooding on the other side and create all sorts of environmental havoc on both sides. So even if Trump gets his wall, it has to be on the levee, leaving a stranded area of U.S. soil between the river and the levee wall. People who cross the river will already be in the USA when they present themselves at the wall to request asylum.

More and more families are coming. The detention centers are not set up to house families. The law does not allow children to be detained for long. The Trump administration wants to:

Detain
Deter by detention
Use images of crowds and crowded detentions and underpasses to claim the brown people are marauding our nation and Only He Can Save Us
Avoid any diplomatic or humanitarian responsibility or leadership

There is a crisis in Central American countries of intense and undiscrimating drug cartel-fueled violence and deep poverty.

What we are seeing at our southern border are people fleeing crises. When we address the crises in Central America then and only then will we stop the wave of immigrants.
