Yes. I judge that too. Be your own person! I mean, if you kinda liked hockey some and then Bob came along and you got really into it, fine. But I've had friends who have gotten into all kinds of stuff just for guys. And not innocent things like hockey.

I knew someone who was dating this guy. She found out he had a thing for redheads. So she dyed her hair red and weeks later he dumped her for a blonde.

OMG-that's my sister you just described-and I love her to death, but every guy she dated all the sudden she shared whatever his big interest was even if it was something she had never cared about before. No more details or she'll see this and know it's me.

"I judge people who go to Back to School Night with their hands-free earsets still attached to their heads."

Most are "WOHM's" who barely work but want to be perceived as working. No, you're not POTUS. You know it. We know it.

A friend had her wedding in DH's country with only his traditions (none of hers), and adopted every last political view and interest of her DH upon marriage. She has no opinion of her own. Sad.

YES, YES, YES! TWO GREAT ONES!

People who impose their personal style on their kids or use their kids as accessories or over-groom them in general - get their baby daughters' ears pierced, dress them up like fruit and take their picture, scotch tape bows to their bald heads. Or parents give their baby boys mohawks.

I would never do anything of the things you listed, but I am all for imposing my own personal style on my baby! As soon as she can voice an opinion on what she wants to wear, I'll respect it, but until then, I am taking full advantage of this opportunity to dress her however I want (for me it's baby clothes that look like baby clothes and not small adult clothes -- mostly dresses).

I think getting ears pierced is a cultural thing in most cases I've seen. Where I come from, it is almost second nature to pierce a baby girls ears very early. My mom got mine pierced when I was 3 weeks old and I got my daughter's done when she was 8 weeks.
It was not a decision based on style at all, I was not worried about what other people would say or think or even how it was going to look at that age. All I knew is that's what we do when we have a baby girl and that when she was 10 or so and her friends were struggling to decide whether or not to do it (if it would hurt or not, etc), she would not have to go through it.

I don't have any issue with the cultural aspect of ear piercing, but this is just flat out stupid. Sorry. And what if she was 10 and decided she didn't want her ears pierced? You've made the decision for her, and at an age where she had no concept of what pain she would be in, or whether she even wanted it done.

It's ear piercing, not amputation of a body part. I don't know what part of this the anti-piercing crowd does not understand. Plus, the chances are good that many, if not most, girls will pierce their ears. I don't know a single woman-not one- who does not have their ears pierced. It is simply NOT that big of a deal.

Also, you act like it is a horrible thing for a parent to impose their choices on their kids. But, parents to it ALL THE TIME for any manner of things.

I did not pierce my DD's ears -though I wanted to do so- becuase she had numerous ear infections and then by the time she was older it seemed to make more sense to wait (she's sensitive and I thought it may scare her). But, I wish I could have done it when she was younger. It's not cultural or anything. I just -gasp!- wanted to do it.

What decisions do we not make for our children?? If we were a vegetarian household, DS would be a vegetarian. If we were Jewish, DS would be Jewish. If Daddy was circ'ed, DS would be circ'ed. If we liked dogs, DS would be raised with pets. If we were racists, we would raise DS in the same ignorant manner. The decisions we impose upon our children are endless.

I love pink and I love to dress my blonde and blue eyed toddler son in pink boy shirts. He might object to that one day, but for now, he has no choice.

I didn't make my point very clearly. I don't have a problem with the cultural aspect of ear piercing. It's the same to me as circumcision, or vegetarian-ness, or those other things mentioned.

But to then go on and justify that at least your daughter won't have to decide, no, she won't have to. Because the choice was removed. Just own the cultural aspect and don't try to justify that it's better for other reasons as well, because in general, taking choices away from kids isn't great.

Of coruse we all impose decisions on kids, but at a certain point, a Catholic child can grow up and decide if they want to continue with Catholocism, a vegetarian can decide to eat meat. Someone with their ears pierced can decide to take out the piercings and let them close up, so it's not that big a deal, but it's not like you're doing her a huge favor by getting it done as a baby. That's all I'm saying.

Culturally, fine. When i see babies with pierced ears, all I really see is more work for the parents to keep them clean and stuff, but it doesn't bother me. It does bother me that you think that doing it as a baby is doing the kid a huge favor.

My MIL's ears are not pierced and she's a WASP.

Totally agree. Every vowel you subsitute with a "Y" is one step closer to the stripper pole.

Or rap star.

Seriously, how many rap stars can you name with mispelled names? I'm talking about real names, not stage names. I hate mispelled names as much as the next person, but where on earth did you come up with this one?

FYI that was my first post here and actually I say to my kids "eat your food because kids are starving" and they are good kids, they care about people and when they have allowance they always give something to the poor, good thing they will not be like you.

actually, i sponsor lots of children and volunteer with victims of human trafficking. i don't consider myself anti-human, but i also think that furry creatures need to be treated kindly too. i judge people who think that its ok to mistreat them or kill them off for no reason or the "theory" that it'll somehow give money to those starving/sick/suffering people.

I don't think she was trying to imply that we need to put furry creatures down, I think she was only trying to say that, if you want to adopt something that will take as much as your time, love, money and consideration as a child would, adopt a child in need. Then, if your house is big enough and your child is asking for a pet, get one too.

That's idiotic. A pet takes as much time, money, love and consideration as a child? Come on.
