So really, this is not a good forum for non AA to ask what are AA doing about the violence, lack of education focus, etc... in the lower SES black community. It would be akin to asking affluent white people why the "poor white trash" in the Appalachias don't push education, etc..

As for the thug culture of blacks, I think this is a lower SES culture that exists in almost every culture..latino, white, even Asians.

I've said it again and again: Whites who live in the city are more likely to be middle/upper class. Blacks (who were pushed to the inner city due to racist redlining policies) are more likely to be poor. Comparing these two groups is ENTIRELY unfair. If one were to make the comparison between poor inner city blacks and poor rural whites, you'd see there are a LOT of similarities.

I don't take anyone seriously who focuses on the way black teens dress. This is largely a hip-hop centered thing and ALL races have embraced hip-hop culture and some of the clothing styles that are associated with it. I wonder why Justin Bieber/Eminem aren't reviled for dressing like thugs?

JB is reviled for a lot of things, and I'm pretty sure most people in the hip hop culture would think he's a joke. However, his latest antics do reveal, maybe not thuggish behavior, but certainly spoiled brat, entitled behavior, and the public and media have reviled him for it.

As for Eminem, I think most people respect him because you don't hear about him being thuggish in public. Rather, in private, he is apparently a really good father. That's why people don't revile him. Some of his lyrics towards women, however, were reviled.

If you are middle class, and you dress this way, people will assume this is just your "style". But if you are lower SES, and you dress this way, yes, people will assume you are a thug. But that would work the reverse, too, if you are lower SES, and you are black and dress like a yuppie, people outside the lower SES neighborhood will think you are middle class, and not a thug, but you would probably get your a** kicked in your 'hood.

Whether you realize it or not, you are showing your bias.

JB has violated the law many times. Speeding, DUIs, vandalizing a neighbor's home, urinating in a cell, etc. It's interesting that you call these law breaking violations the symptoms of a spoiled brat and not a thug. This, despite the fact that many label black teens as thugs simply from the way they dress, with NO idea on whether or not they've actually ever committed a crime.

Eminem. Uhmmm, his many of lyrics focused heavily on raping/killing his own mother. Same for his wife. With so many folks putting down black rappers for degrading women, I find it interesting that you don't lump him in with the same group. Good father? Didn't he battle drug addiction for a number of years?

BTW, my main point is how folks criticize the dressing style of black teens. Why not the same criticism when whites do the same?

Also, it's obvious that you have little experience of low-income neighborhoods. There's hardly a uniform that all the poor folks wear and there are plenty of people who dress like your typical suburban kid.

I googled "thug", and here's how it is defined:

1. a violent person, especially a criminal.
2. historical - a member of a religious organization of robbers and assassins in India. Devotees of the goddess Kali, the Thugs waylaid and strangled their victims, usually travelers, in a ritually prescribed manner. They were suppressed by the British in the 1830s.
3. urban dictionary: As Tupac defined it, a thug is someone who is going through struggles, has gone through struggles, and continues to live day by day with nothing for them. That person is a thug. and the life they are living is the thug life.

I don't see JB as violent, #2 or #3. I don't think Eminem really fits the profile either. And a thug is not just someone who has a committed a crime. So yea, neither of those two guys fit a thug definition.

And I think in general, people on this forum are talking about the violent black neighborhoods where *a lot* of the boys do dress a certain way.. as we have now defined as "thugish", and not necessarily the lower SES and "trying to obey the law" kind of neighborhoods.

I get it. You're racist. Or, at the very least, you like believing in racist stereotypes. It's hilarious that you take Tupac's opinion over that of Webster's Dictionary.

I have no idea what you are saying.

The prior poster said a person would get their ass kicked on the so called hood for dressing middle class( whatever that is)
And I was punting out how asinine a statement that was. People watch a lot of TV and know 5 people that are black/brown/poor and they think they are a social anthropologist, not realizing they are just spectacularly stupid!

I'm PP.. I stated.. "dressing like a yuppie", not middle class.. do you know what that means? I'm middle class and I don't dress like a yuppie. And I know more than 5 people that are black/brown. My HS was 60+% black, so I have been around a lot of black people.

Ok, OP, read the above opinion piece from The Root. It gives you the answers you are looking for at least for "some" black parents. You know they are as different as all of us, right? It was shared with me by a dear friend whose black teenage son is close friends with my teenage white son. It is a great piece. I had my son read it too so he would be aware. We all need to acknowledge that things are different for different people. I want my son to know that and some of his friends have to deal with some things he might not, and of course, that is always true but rarely as deadly as this example.

so...because I went to a predominately black HS, you are saying it doesn't make me black? No duh. You go to church, you are not God, but you do understand God a bit more because you are around more Godly people, hopefully, since God shows himself through his Believers. Same here.. I may not be black, but I was around them alot, so I get them more than you think.

And I'm gonna guess that I have been around more black gangs than most people on this board, maybe even you, because the HS I went to had Crips and Bloods. I saw a lot of sh1t. So, I'm not completely ignorant of such things, nor am I just going by what I see on the media.

I just had to address this bit of police bashing, race baiting drivel here.

1) Every (responsible) parent teaches their child what to do WHEN the cops pull them over (ps. White people get pulled over too).

2) She implies that she is afraid that her sons and grandsons wi be shot by police, hence the whole "this is what you do if you get pulled over bit, but then lists a bunch of young black men and boys who were not killed by police (all the while implying the opposite). And not only were those young men not killed by police, the last one: Michael Dunn, is actually the white killer of a young black man, not a murdered black youth.

3) This woman's energy would be much better spent worrying about much more likely threats to her black sons and grandsons. She may want to worry that they will drop out of school (48% of black men) or be arrested by the age of 23 (49% of black men) or spend time in prison (16% of black men) or, worst of all, be one of the 93% of black murder victims killed by another black person.

By contrast, there are about 42 million black men in America and police kill about 100 of them per year. With an average life span of 75 years, a black man has a 0.0002% chance of being killed by police (someone check my math on that as it could be off by a couple thousands of a percent or so).

This is so funny. My husband is from the straight up hood, Westwood-Memphis, TN and been dressing like this since 4th grade. To the person who posted this, you fail to realize that the "Prep" look for the black folks has been popular since the 80's. Everyone wanted to wear Ralph Lauren and Polo. Why? Cause is was expensive and folks knew if your mom dressed you in polo you had cash (even while living poor) otherwise known as hood rich. Husband still wears nothing but polo, right down to the socks. Take the man out the hood, but can't take the hood out...

Wow you do get it, can you please help the reality deaf whites and others in this thread. Their belief is the righteousness of their own ignorance is breathtaking.

I do not scare easily. But, this continued killing of young Black men scares me.
I have two sons. One was born the color of coffee with too much cream. Usually, by the end of summer, both him and his sister are a beautiful bronzed, caramel shade. My boy has a killer smile and a soft huge heart. And, my grandson looks like him. Baby Drew is ambiguously brown; his chubby cheeks and dimpled thighs are a molten mocha shade that comes from having a "Mixed" family tree.
I have had the "How To Behave WHEN (not if) You Are Pulled Over By The Police" conversation with my son one too many times. "Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel at 10 and 2". Say "Yes Sir" and "No Sir". ASK before you reach for the registration that is in the glove-box. Etc. Etc. Each time he listened to me. He knows the drill.
That does not lessen my fear. I have been afraid for him, for as long as I have been his mother. Now Mama Carol is afraid for Baby Drew too.
The burning coal of fear I carry within me has once again been fanned into a roaring fire. The tragedy and horror that engulfed the short lives of Darius Simmons, Trayvon Martin, Emmitt Till, Jordan Davis, Michael Dunn and so many more young men of color ... physically hurts me. I feel battered and bruised.
But ...somehow that hurt and fear have not eclipsed the other fire I carry within me. The twin flames of Faith and Hope still burn brightly inside me. They have not gone out.
But … Dear Ones, they are dimmer today. Today, both are dimmer.

You are so right because racism does not exist, because white criminals do not exist, white peoe are not killed by other white people and fearing corrupt cops is an assault on ALL cops. Thanks for the wake up call .
