I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

The earlier makeup days are 1/29 and 3/31.

1/29 is too early to be used as a makeup days. 3/31 is Eid al-Fitr. Let’s not take away the Muslim holiday again.

1/29 is plenty far away. The Board could approve it this week.

1/29 is a grading day. When do you think end of quarter tests and projects could be graded? Should emergency overtime pay be authorized for teachers?

As other have pointed out, it’s an official make up day. MCEA agreed to it. Otherwise it is not really a makeup day. If you have a problem with it, complain to your union.

They have to call that ahead of the storm, so it is too late. They would have had to call it Friday.

I mean going forward for any future storms?

The PP is mistaken. MCPS can't go virtual anymore. At least, they'd have to all of the reserved make-up days before they'd be allowed to consider that.

Schools and Offices Closed

They won’t do the make up day until we’ve already exceeded the snow days. That means that they can’t do January 29 as a make up until we have another snow day after tomorrow. This is how we know that they almost certainly will not use that make up day and we’ll go against the Muslims.

Why is 1/29 too early? If we use 3 this snowstorm, 1/29 is perfect.

Exactly. There's a very good chance there will be another closure before 3/31. We're going to need both 1/29 and 3/31.

I predict closure on Wed., but child care programs will be allowed to operate.

Yes, and that additional snow day is going to be Wednesday. They will probably announce the closure tomorrow at around 6PM. There's plenty of time to make 1/29 a school day.

We shall see.

Offices being closed tomorrow is a sign to make contingency plans for at least a delay Wednesday. I don't think I've ever seen it happen that offices were closed one day and then the schools started up on time the following day.

More reason to begin planning for a school day on 1/29

How do they decide if offices are closed or open and child care can or can't operate? I totally understand why schools are closed tomorrow but what are the factors that go into the other decisions and how do they know that already?

Why are y’all so desperate to have school on 1/29. End of quarter grading + report cards takes several hours for most teachers. It usually takes me 6 hours or so to get everything done correctly. It is not as easy as it looks. There are always several kids with special situations that need to be figured out. I also go through all the grades and adjust them upwards if needed. Tons of kids turn in a whole bunch of stuff on the last day. It is hard to refuse to accept their assignments because these are kids who have Es and Ds. Same with some special education students.

January 29 is an in-service day for support staff; lots of training for paras and other staff members is scheduled. I’d hate to see that day become a makeup day.

Because there are limited options for make-up days in the calendar and 1/29 and 3/31 are far better than the alternatives.
