MCPS closing/delaying on Monday?

That’s why they should have built in more days!

It was *already* identified as a make-up day. Pay more attention when they're creating the calendar.

1/29 is an optional professional day for paras. The system will not take that day away due to the fact that funding/resources has already allocated for professional development.

Agree to prepare for a delay on Wednesday

Agreed. I find the way this area responds (or doesn't respond) to snow to be ridiculous. But the school system should be aware that even a little snow has the potential to close school for a day, and build in enough days to account for that.

They probably wouldn't arrange and pay for training that can't be rescheduled on a make-up day. They can probably move that.

The union wants it both ways. They don’t want to build in extra days because if they don’t use them, they still have to work. But they also don’t want the makeup days that make the most sense from a learning perspective, earlier in the year, used.

Particularly because people always try to rehash arguments to try to prevent the use of previously agreed-upon make-up days.

I also wish that there could be some separation where some schools could open with others still working towards it….

But most MCPS employees don’t work at schools in the same neighborhood where they live, and schools can’t open without being staffed. Furthermore, if almost all students are expected to walk, sidewalks will need to be safe, which means you’re relying even more on the citizens of MoCo to clear and/or salt the sidewalks abutting their properties. I don’t know about you, but I definitely have neighbors who don’t adhere to snow removal ordinances.

I'm sorry, but some of you need to adjust your threshold over sidewalk "safety." Get your kids some boots and tell them to walk slow if needed. There are pleny of kids all over the northern parts of th US that trudge to the bus stop/school on icy sidewalks all winter long. And YES, I know that some of these places have sidewalk plows (I grew up in one of them) but honestly the plows just remove the top bits and then the lower layer ices over. Unless you truly scrape down to pavement and there's no daily melt/refreeze from adjacent areas, it's just the way it is.

Conveniently, you ignored the issue with staffing and focused on sidewalks.

A few inches of snow with no ice doesn’t make sidewalks impassable, but when we had the 30” snowfall in 2016, one of my neighbors with a corner lot (tons of sidewalk) didn’t clear so much as one shovelful. The snow kept refreezing and was so solid, it couldn’t be removed after a few days. Their sections of sidewalk were impassable. Thirty days later, they were the only house in the neighborhood with snow/ice still on their sidewalks. We had to take an alternate walking route for more than a month. If there’s ice, sidewalks become treacherous and falls can lead to fairly serious injuries.

The union needs to wake up and realize they're not the "customers" of the school system. The worst that happens with extra days is that the kids get some more learning in. The horror!

I hope they will add make-up days before then. HS kids could use the time for their AP classes.

The earlier makeup days are 1/29 and 3/31.

1/29 is too early to be used as a makeup days. 3/31 is Eid al-Fitr. Let’s not take away the Muslim holiday again.

1/29 is plenty far away. The Board could approve it this week.

1/29 is a grading day. When do you think end of quarter tests and projects could be graded? Should emergency overtime pay be authorized for teachers?

As other have pointed out, it’s an official make up day. MCEA agreed to it. Otherwise it is not really a makeup day. If you have a problem with it, complain to your union.

I guess you don’t care if your child receives feedback on their work.

I don’t understand why this issue can’t be solved by MCPS’s agreeing to shave days off the end of the year so we only have 180 days of instruction, even if we initially scheduled 185 in case of inclement weather. Why don’t we just end the school year on the 180th day of instruction, whenever that is?

Ah, so school is just child care for your family. Understood.

Others parents want teachers to have sufficient time to assess and comment on student work such as papers and projects so that their kids can learn from any shortcomings.

You have teachers that give feedback?!
